I've used both portals over the past couple of days, no issues logging in on either.

Colm Fagan will be on Pat Kenny Newstalk at 11 am this morning.

I agree, for your regular PK listener, the take-away point was that Colm's pension ferry is better than a (dingy) pension dinghy.

    Cheapest Electricity Supplier

Has anyone else come across energypal.ie yet? It allows you to use your own electricity consumption data (which you download from ESB Networks) to cross-check against the plans available from various energy providers. Very effective once setup as it removes the guess-work.

Key Post Why you should never use a limited company to invest in residential property

I had a look at the conditions for the relief on Revenue's website. At least at first glance it seems pretty clear cut, what am I missing? "The relief does not apply to disposals of: shares (other than shares that qualify for relief under this section), securities or other assets held as...

The new portal says coming soon (or words to that effect) and the link points to the "preview" URL. I'd suggest you register for the current/old portal if you need to withdraw funds.

Local Property Tax for Pre 63 House

If the declarations confirm subdivision into 9 units, then you can use this to explain the situation to Revenue. Some declarations say 'multiple units' which would be less helpful for you (btw councils read 'multiple' as being '2' units). Worth getting legal advice before anything else.

Local Property Tax for Pre 63 House

Did you receive proof when buying the house that it was subdivided into 9 units before the '63 act came into force? (Eg declarations)

    Default Investment Strategy

A little off topic but the Govt's scheme was discussed on the IT's Inside Business podcast. The guy interviewed was highly sceptical AE would be introduced this side of a general election...

    Separate Assessment better than Joint?

Assuming both you and your partner had €42k+ of PAYE income, wouldn't it be better to opt for separate assessment, if both of you individually additionally earned €5k of deposit interest, rather than jointly earning €10k? I know we're talking about a max saving of €400 on €10k, but it's also...

Electric Car Value Trade In. Please Help

We took the plunge 5/6 years ago to go electric for our second car, and this is where I think the sweet spot lies. The pick ups / drop offs, the grocery shops, trips to places within about an hour of home etc, this is how it's used. Turns out it covers 80% of our our driving needs, meaning...

Pensions Council rejects Colm Fagan's proposal despite its independent consultant endorsing it

I think you're hitting on two interesting points. 1) Comparison: As far as I'm aware, only Colm's AE approach has been independently evaluated. Given the impact AE will have on the population for years to come, if any of us had this decision to make, wouldn't we want a similar evaluation of the...

Pensions Council rejects Colm Fagan's proposal despite its independent consultant endorsing it

Re-reading the report, I'm going to correct myself. The fund / smoothed value wouldn't necessarily drop, even during a bear market, due to the smoothing effect. The other huge benefit of this approach is that you are invested for life. Again I'd bite someone's hand off for this type of...

Pensions Council rejects Colm Fagan's proposal despite its independent consultant endorsing it

I think you're missing a piece of the puzzle. During bear markets, the value of the fund would drop, like you would expect. It does this to a lesser extent however than if no smoothing was in place. The reverse happens during bull markets. The buffer account shores up the fund when the market...

Letter in today's IT re: AE

You have to look at the result. Ending up with duplicate incentive systems, with all of the associated additional overhead which goes with it, is a drastic response to that problem. By all means top up those who don't earn enough, but do it within the existing system. Every variable adds to...

Letter in today's IT re: AE

I'm trying to wrap my head around why they've come up with two different incentive systems, the existing tax relief one, and this new scheme. It seems a backward move to make an already complex system more complicated. I agree the "€1 for €3" has an attractive 'sales pitch', similar to the old...

Auto-enrolment Bill seeking Cabinet approval this morning

The IT is also reporting on it https://www.irishtimes.com/business/2024/03/27/government-plan-for-january-start-to-pension-auto-enrolment-deemed-optimistic/ "At this stage, an implementation date of January 1st, 2025, seems very optimistic given the level of infrastructure that needs to be put...
