So Christine Lagarde thinks the Irish people are heroes.

It's easy to get the numbers on activation schemes: http://cso.ie/en/releasesandpublications/er/lr/liveregisterdecember2014/ Annex- Live Register Activation Programmes. The numbers are steady 2014 over 2013 which can be construed as these programmes are not being widened as one might have...

Penalty points Alan Shatter and Mick Wallace

In all of its big ticket issues in recent years PAC basically acts as the public theatre to work done by Civil or Public Servants in investigating areas of inefficient or wasteful spending. That’s not a criticism by the way, it’s right that PAC calls in the officials who did the investigating...

    Our "World Class" education system

Slightly off-topic, but is that because since leaving school 25+ years you have kept up an interest in both French and german wheras you have no interest in Irish and therefore have 'isolated' yourself from it over a similar period? My German would be a lot better than my Irish (I left school...

Garda Sergeants turn their back on Shatter

Like it or not, Guards are not normal 'employees', they're sworn members of a force dedicated to the safety of the citizen and the security of the State. There's a need to maintain a discipline that isn't required in other jobs. I'm not saying they don't have a gripe, nor am I saying that...

    The Gathering

It's hardly 'speaking out' I think. The whole thing is a marketing drive to get people to visit Ireland and spend money. It's wrong to call it a scam when it's plainly obvious what it is from the get-go. There's a difference between 'connecting with the diaspora' and whatever that entails and...

Best pub in Dublin for German Euro games?

Sinnotts under Stephen's Green Shopping Centre would be a good shout. Watched one or two German games from previous tournaments in there and there was always a good crowd of Germans around.

Why does a birth certificate need to be dated within 3 months?

Is there crossed wires at play here? A birth must be registered within 3 months. Once it's registered a birth cert issues. The birth cert is a valid document irrespective of its original date of issue.

Why is Newstalk absolutely obsessed with the Vatican Embassy non story?

I would have thought it quite obvious that cost is not the primary reason but merely a prime example of taking full advantage of a good crisis.

    Irish hat trick in Iran

The reaction generally to Zayed’s hat-trick reveals more about people's patronizing attitude to the LOI than anything else in my opinion. Are people amazed that a guy from the LOI can score goals in front of 90,000 people?? He’s had a good goal to game ratio since he made his debut in...

    A new treaty in Europe

Ah yes, the old bulldog spirit. Down with Johnny Foreigner!

MEP - Childers kicking up over Kevin Cardiff. Is she right?

How was he responsible for the error, other than being the Sec Gen? What exactly was the error, I haven't seen any account other than journalistic accounts which seem to me to be based on playing off one agency's leaking against the other. I fail to see how Cardiff can be held to account...

    EURO 2012 play-off draw

There's a good few options via various airports in the UK (Edinburgh, Liverpool and Luton are some I know of for sure) also. It's a good spot for a football away trip.

    Well Done, Shamrock Rovers.

To think 6 years ago we were in examinership and now we're going to Monaco to watch the draw for the group stages....words can't express what this means. ROVERS! ROVERS! FAO Lex....I have a similarly low opinion of Cork fans that I've met down through the years, particularly the hundreds...

    Christmas markets in Europe

Cologne and Stuttgart are both among the better ones in my experience. There's a nice Christmas feel to both markets but both cities are big enough that if the whole Christmas market experience brings out the 'Bah, Humbug' in you, there's enough other things to interest (shops, bars...

    We look GREAT!!

Apparently Brother Walfrid (Irish founder of the club) did pronounce it with the "K" sound as opposed to the "S" sound, but that was lost in the passage of time and ramblings of Glaswegians presumably.

    Chapelizod Bus routes

Be warned that due to route changes a lot of buses that used to serve Chapelizod now no longer do and use the by-pass instead. It's probably no more than 15/20mins from Chapelizod to Grafton Street on the bus though. It's a great location. And the Villager is a great little pub too.

Micheál Martin wants 250,000 Irish speakers by 2030

Veering slightly offtopic but how many people felt they were fluent in a foreign language on leaving secondary? The constant refrain in these discussions is "I spent XX years learning irish and I can't speak a word". After 6 years (or whatever) learning german or French are our schoolkids...

    England's World Cup bid

Don't think the fans would support every game any more than in Spain/Portugal, Belgium/Holland or even Russia. Plenty of empty seats at Euro 96 for games between so called lesser nations. Agree they have the stadia and the transport infrastructure etc but so do the other Western European...
