If you have enough stamps for the contrib. state pension, and you have stopped working and are not seeking employment - do you have to keep signing on right up to pension age?

Where should an ex-Civil Servant invest their lump-sum?

The post office saving plans have attractive interest rates compared to other deposits which are subject to DIRT. But (and it's a big "but"), the reward depends on leaving the deposit untouched for the entire period. You can get at your money earlier - but there's a penalty. And what if...

Opening a foreign Currency Savings Account

Opening a foreign currency account is relatively simple. If the bank know you, they will take your Euro, convert it to let's say USD and that's it. If they don't know you, you will have to jump through the usual identity hoops first. (Utility bills etc). But what about the pitfalls? The USD is...

German Bunds v German Deposit Account

Okay, so we've had the budget and we know that if you buy a property and keep it for 5 years, you don't have to pay the savage 30% capital on what you get for it. So why buy German Bonds? Why not buy a rentable apartment in a good Dublin area?

    Foreign Currency On Deposit

Apparently, if you open a foreign account, you are liable for tax. Does this mean tax on the interest (like DIRT) or does it mean that the lump sum that you lodge is taxed as if it were income? If so, maybe you could end up paying 20% tax?

Money on Deposit Safety of the Euro

So what would happen? Would a house currently selling for Euro 300k become PN 300k? - and so it would make no difference to the potential buyer - just a different name for the currency? Would it be that the only sufferer would be the person travelling abroad?

Money on Deposit Safety of the Euro

The thing is, if (for whatever reason) Ireland were to find itself reverting to the Punt Nua, as far as I am aware, an acccount with RD or NR would be regarded as an Irish account and would be converted out of Euro - like it or not. This is because although the mother bank is Dutch and British...

Moving deposits abroad, what's your opinion on pros and cons?

I was thinking of moving some cash abroad - my fear would be that if the Euro breaks up, we in Ireland will be shafted. If I had an account in Keytrade (Brussels), would the contents of the account be repatriated if the Euro split and we reverted to the Punt (or to an inferior version of the...

New Property Boom - Don't let it happen!

Of course people in negative equity are entitled to Neg. Eq. loans if they can afford it. But that is a big if! And the real danger is that many people will be given these loans who can't afford them. The result? These people will be in even worse debt and the money floating around will push up...

New Property Boom - Don't let it happen!

There's a golden rule! When banks make funds available to buyers, the people who actually profit, are the developers. The banks are about to issue "negative equity loans" so even people in negative equity can get their hands on money. Once this happens, the developers will up the price of...

    Deposit guarantee. Foreign v. Irish

If Ireland goes bust and can't pay depositors (yeah I know, highly unlikely and all that) but if it does go bust - and/or leaves the Euro (yeah, right, also unlikely), but if something like that happens, and you have a deposit account with a foreign bank like Rabo or NIB. Will your deposit be safe?
