    Smart Meters

some of the suppliers have 24H smart plans, so maybe that's what he meant. My understanding is that once you switch to a smart plan, you can't go back to a "non-smart" plan.

    Solar Panels with Gas Boiler

in terms of return on investment, I'd be confident solar panels will perform a lot better than retrofitting. We've just had them fitted and I expect payback in under 10 years (possibly as low as 5 if energy prices stay high). I ran the numbers on external insulation and full retrofit and the...

Major headaches with Revolut and N26 after phone got stolen

Pretty sure I have to unlock my phone (using fingerprint) to use GPay.

    Copper wire phone

I know virgin media cable internet needs power, because ours has gone down when there's been power cuts nearby but we still have power, so a backup power source wouldn't necessarily help in that case I'm not sure about fibre-to-home services - a lot of the infrastructure is passive (i.e...

    Cash pension at 50 years

OK then, take it out, pay the tax and increase AVCs to the max until you've put 75K back into the new pension (if they're already maxing out their AVCs then this won't work, but if they "need the money" as stated in the OP, then that seems unlikely).

    Revenue - slow responses

Can I pay the class S minimum of €500 via form 11 if my income for the year is below the threshold for PRSI? This (2023) will be my final year self-employed and I'm already paying Class A again for 2024, so it's a once off. I can add €500 to the PRSI box at the end of form 11, I just want to...

    Revenue - slow responses

form 11, but the query I'm waiting on is a very basic question about PRSI. I mostly expect them to come back and say "ask DSP" but how can it take 10 weeks!

    Revenue - slow responses

In the past I've found Revenue very responsive to queries, a rare bright spot in the general public service. However I've a query that's been "in progress" for 2 months now on ROS with no update (it's not anything complex either, a simple question) and when I tried to ring I was told I'd be...

Killing brambles in hedge, no access to roots

I doubt that would work, brambles are very vigorous. Roundup might work applied to the roots but not 4ft away from the roots. Can you not get under the hedge? TBH even if you can get to the roots, they're a bugger to get rid of completely, they just keep growing back.

ESRI: 2/3rds of people living in houses too big for their needs

downsizing is a touchy subject - a few politicians have mentioned it in recent years and immediately been torn to pieces for "trying to force old people out of their homes". The main issue is there are very few suitable properties for older people to move into, they don't want small apartments...

N26 Launch Savings Account Paying 2.80% to 4.00% less fees

Isn't PRSI only applicable if your non-PAYE income exceeds 5K. So if you had 100K in N26 but no other interest earning savings or investments, then it's not payable?

    Heating water with Electricity.

if you have a tank you can set it to heat overnight when the price of electricity is cheaper (this is the "economy 7" tariff she mentions, presumably she's in NI). Heating water with full rate electricity is a very expensive option.

Paying a bonus into my pension as an AVC

even if you end up paying tax on some of it now, presumably the payroll system will fix that over the rest of the year, or you can just claim back the overpaid tax in January.

Issues claiming partial Home Carer's Tax Credit

if you're filing form 11 it'll only allocate that credit if it's more beneficial than the increased standard rate, the form works it out for you.

When will vodafone start selling BB on Virgin fibre?

Sky have also signed a deal with VM and I believe they are selling it now. But it's only areas that have actual fibre, neither company will be reselling on co-axial cable connections which is still most of VM's network.
