Baby due - should we trade up?

Mothercare would like you to think that a baby needs all this stuff but in practice it doesn't. Some things are nice to have and others might turn out to be a complete waste of money. If babies could choose they would prefer to sleep with their parents in the bed and carried in a sling rather...

32 year old, hopes to semi retire by 40

I have 2 young kids, a third on the way and we live on a farm. So far they are very cheap, I have no childcare costs, they wear second hand clothes (new shoes is the only extravagence), they are/were breastfed, we use washable nappies, no tv and on a farm there is no need for other entertainment...

Having a baby extra tax credits.

If either your friend or her husband decide to stay at home after the birth, tax credits (and some of the 20% allowance) can be transferred to the other person and a home carers allowance of €900 can be claimed. Otherwise as j26 so succinctly put it, no and they'll have to pay for childcare.

Wife wants to stay at home and mind kids

As chris20051 says you can claim her tax credit, some of her tax allowance at 20% and you can also claim the home carers tax credit of €900 per year. http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/it1.html

Investec -- too good to be true?

A company I worked for used Investec for years. The reason most people haven't heard of them is that they used to target the corporations rather than personal customers. We never had any issues with them and regulary used them as they gave us the best rate and we put on much larger deposits than...

    One last bash-where?

If I didn't have kids I would go long haul and somewhere hot as I wouldn't consider this until the kids are a lot older (when they can and will apply their own sun lotion and will sit still for more than 10 minutes). I wish I'd gone to South Africa (or anywhere in Africa) and I loved Thailand...

Moving from a 2 income to 1 income family

    1. Yes, your tax credit increases to €3,660 2. You'll get €45,400 @ 20% balance at 41% 3. Technically she shouldn't as she won't be seeking work 4. You claim carers tax credit of €900 per year if she doesn't earn an income of more than €5,080 in the year...

Difference between assistant accountant and trainee accountant

I agree with Mpsox I would also think a trainee is not as well paid but will get help with qualifications, study leave and possibly better work experience. An assistant Accountant would be better paid, hired to do a more specific job and be back up to the accountant.

Cost of Post Grad Courses in Ireland are Outrageous

I thought the Open University was great and would recommend it to anyone. I have spent a fair amount of money on post grad qualifications (personally and through work) and I've found it to be the best investment I've ever made in terms of pay and experience gained. I always used the cheaper...

Is it worth staying at work?

It's long clip but a very interesting talk by Elizabeth Warren who researched and wrote the Two Income Trap - why the middle classes are going broke. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akVL7QY0S8A Once you are married your wife can transfer some of her tax credits and allowances to you. I'm...

Are AVCs worth it if only getting 20% relief?

I've been thinking the same thing but have decided that 20% is better than 0% and I'm buying shares (or whatever my fund is buying) at hopefully the bottom of the market so there will be some future gain in value. If you're young and can afford it, it's probably worth doing as you might not...

Calculation of the average salary used in the SCSB.

I was in a similar situation but I didn't know the SCSB formula I was just told the amount. I wasn't really too bothered about the tax free lump sum as I believe I can get most of it back from Top Slicing Relief (TSR) which is based on your average tax % rate over the previous 3 years. As these...

4th Schedule VAT ...... Help Needed

I would ask the customer if they can claim back Irish VAT, if they can you have a choice and can charge them VAT. If they can't (or you think it's more appropriate depending on the service you provide) set up the invoice as a 4th Schedule service whereby the customer accounts for the VAT...

    rat problem:(

You can get child and pet safe poison boxes for mice and and bigger ones for rats (you can do it yourself or get an expert in). You could also get a terrier or some cats. There are rats everywhere so I wouldn't worry too much about your lawn once you've got rid of them. I know it's a horrible...

    Child Care

No you can't claim tax back on child care. You or your spouse can claim a home carer tax credit and personal tax credits if one of you is earning less than €6,880 per year but only if you're married. You might be able to claim other benefits depending on your income. The early child care...

Can I claim Self-emplyed husbands tax credits

I claim my self employed husbands tax credits and get the carers allowance as he earns less than €6,000 per year and minds the kids. We don't claim any benefits though and we submit a joint assessed form 12 every year.
