vat liability on (new) second hand car??

Make sure you check with the dealer first, but if you are importing it to Ireland/exporting direct from UK they fill out a form from inland revenue which lets them sell it tax free to you. However you naturally have to pay the VAT in Ireland, 21.5% instead of 15% on the ex-vat UK price. The...

    Price Reductions on Carzone

Currently yes thats true, you will definetly take a hit on the resale price. However, I think as more and more UK imports occur it wont be a big thing. TBH most UK imports should actually be worth more, but thanks to the local industry bad mouthing them it creates a artifical mistrust and...

    Engagement Rings UK?

Anyone have any views on whether its now a good time to buy a ring in London or elsewhere in the UK with the exchange rate and VAT reductions just announced. Would it be as good as say antwerp with these recent changes?

Garda 6 day "blitz" learners/NCT/Tyres etc.

There was one outside Gorey on the Arklow road at 9am on Friday morning, just knew it would be there when they said they would have a crackdown as its just an obvious place and time for it. That said I was waved through and they didn't even look at tax/ins etc.

SRS warning light on dash of car

Glad to hear it worked out Nicola, surprised they couldn't read the fault must need a specific Merc diagnostic machine. They seem to be a good outfit alright.

SRS warning light on dash of car

I believe so, they are higly rated in terms of what they do, so I'd say they are probably more expensive that a smaller independent garage but not as expensive as a main dealer. With something like an airbag prob its worth getting someone with the proper knowhow giving it a check IMO.

SRS warning light on dash of car

No you'll be fine. It basically disables itself and shows the light as a warning to let you know its off. There is always a tiny risk though that the problem could be on the airbag unit itself and that it might deploy regardless but its a small risk. A very highly rated indepedent garage in...

SRS warning light on dash of car

Very unlikely and almost impossible for it to deploy. When the light comes on like on ABS the system is generally disabled because there is some fault and mostly this is an eletrical short/or loose connection. Has happened to a few cars on me and its normally a loose cable or connection under...

Renting a sports car for a weekend?

Jeez its not exactly cheap is it.. €1950 for a 911 for a weekend!!! You'd be nearly better buying one for a few weeks and then selling it again! Not criticising the company itself as I know the costs in Ireland ar ridiculous but coulnd't see myself paying that much! Plus you have to organise...

Independent mechanic for BMW X5 oil service

I saw a detailed thread on how to change your oil yourself and seems easy enough.. if not just a bit messy. Just curious though - is the light on just telling you to change oil or is a normal service light - would there not be a few other things that should be done? I thought in this day age...

Independent mechanic for BMW X5 oil service

Service indicator can be re-set easily yourself or by meachanic - just a combination of button presses, google it and you should find out how. That said almost all independent garages will have a diagnostic machine to reset this for you after an oil change.

    How to locate a mechanic?

Hi Casper, I was in exactly same position as you when I moved a while ago and 'inspired' me to set up this site [broken link removed] - its not live long and will need time to 'grow' but there may be one or two close to you. The more people than recommend garages for others the better.

Lower fuel prices on the quays in Dublin!

Very true, but without going off topic one could argue that the quality of food in certain shops is better than other with lower prices (and I'm not saying it is but just making the point) but in general petrol and diesel are the same no matter where you buy - I know there are some who would...

Lower fuel prices on the quays in Dublin!

In fairness you buy one litre of milk or one loaf of bread every few days whereas you might buy 60 litres of fuel so a 10cent saving actually equates to €6 per fill. Nearly a couple of extra 'pints' of beer for your Friday night!

Recommendations for a mechanic to check a used car?

Hi Folks, would appreciate if you could put a review of carcheck on my site [broken link removed], have had a number of people looking for a recommendation of a good company/person who does vehicle checks and not as expensive as AA etc..

What happens when a car is written off?

What they generally do now is send the car to a scrap yard, a local one or one they normally use who will then contact you and make you an offer for the remains of the car (not that you have a lot of choice of course!) and send you a cheque for that amount. The insurance company will then send...

    www.irishfuelprices.com

We have just added petrol and diesel prices to our site ([broken link removed]). We rely on the public to update the prices but it is simple and the response so far has been very good, already done one radio interview about it so there definetly is an interest in tracking prices at the moment...
