    declaring inheritance to revenue (80%)

We were advised by solicitor at that time that there was a requirement to submit a return as although we were receiving a relatively small inheritance, we had exceeded the 80% aggregate threshold (due to a previous inheritance from an uncle) and that it was each individuals responsibility to do...

    declaring inheritance to revenue (80%)

I have done as requested above and registered with ros(revenue) and completed a short form it38. However, I have siblings in similar position who are abroad (one permanently, the other for a few months) who are wondering if this needs to be done at all or before the Nov 10 deadline. What are the...

Marriage equality referendum - "rights" to kids etc.

There is evidence that non biological fathers are much more likely (by over 20 times) to molest their children. e.g. "A 1992 survey studying father-daughter incest in Finland reported that of the 9,000 15-year old high school girls who filled out the questionnaires, of the girls living with...

Marriage equality referendum - "rights" to kids etc.

There is a saying that 'Hard cases make bad law' and I think that this is happening here. i.e. People may be voting 'Yes' out of some misplaced and emotional sense of guilt. .....Not a good reason (imo)

The cowboys must be rubbing their hands

I come from a rural area where many building and manual workers are unemployed and they are often in a position to get cheaply or a present of a small plot of land and to build for themselves. I admire there self sufficiency and I think it is reasonable and that people should be allowed to...

Marriage equality referendum - "rights" to kids etc.

As regards to the above, my interpretation of the meaning of 'unique' in this context is that in the normal course of events, the sexual union of a man and a woman is the only sexual union that can bear fruit so to speak and produce new human beings. But you are possibly right in that from a...

Marriage equality referendum - "rights" to kids etc.

I think its important to go back to first principles and note that marriage is first and foremost a 'contract'. And one of the principles of contract is that because contracts are voluntary agreements, if the two parties wish to terminate the contract, they have the option to do so or to create...

capital acquisitions tax and problem with title

The purchaser was giving full photocopies of a bundle of documents consisting of deeds of assent, will, death certs etc. that link my ownership back to my great grandfather (1880s). There is also record of rents that were paid (around 6pounds/year) which I don't think helps. To continue with...

capital acquisitions tax and problem with title

You are right about this been costly and to question the necessity of doing this. The solicitor (who also handled probate) also made the same point but nevertheless states that the property will be very difficult/ impossible to sell unless first registration is done. (My first attempt to sell...

capital acquisitions tax and problem with title

Thanks all for replies. Probate has been taking out. The title or lack of has to go to the land registry examiner but 'exhaustive searches' must be carried out beforehand as per requirement. This is quite a lengthy process and involves submission of affidavits etc. I have been told that this...

capital acquisitions tax and problem with title

The €62k is the valuation (what the property would likely sell for ) and takes into account its poor condition I have no problem with this and indeed I have a buyer at this price, if I had title. My problem is that I don't have title and hence cannot sell at present or get the value that has...

capital acquisitions tax and problem with title

I have inherited a very old house from my uncle valued at 62k . I was hoping to sell this property and pay the capital acquisition tax (about 10k) which is due in the next few months out of the proceeds of sale. However, there appears to be a huge and unforeseen problem (at the time of probate)...

    multifuel stove question,

A weak mortar mix (sand/ cement ) will probably work. I used this lately on a one meter verticle 5 inch pipe. If the area is very hot, or the area is very close to the stove, you could use fire cement. Its recommended to light a few small fires the first few times.

Labour relations commission (LRC) - Hearing

I had a dispute with an employer a few years ago and met a rights commissioner. I also had to go to the employment appeals tribunal on a different matter with the same employer. Both experiences were OK and relatively informal. Be sure to bring all your documentation, wage slips, time...

    Removing Tinted Window film

Had that problem a long time ago. If I can remember correctly, I just used a packet of stanley blades and 'shaved' the glue off. There is a scraper available that holds the blades. It was very tedious but worked in the end. But I had problems with the back heated rear window because its very...

Make pension fund available to creditors

I took an early retirement deal a while ago and the impression I got (on a pre-retirement course) was that the government was anxious that the pension funds were left intact for early retirees as they often pass away and leave widows and orphans behind. A healthy personal pension can save the...

    Solicitor who is co-executor.

Thanks all for your advice. Incidentally, the aged person (testator) in this case dealt with his local solicitor for many years and had already made a will. However, about two years ago, he had a falling out with his local solicitor over some small detail and in a huff travelled to another town...
