No bank drafts, gift cheques or cheque books anymore!

Having spent a bit of time in France over the last few years, specifically Brittany, I've been surprised at how widely cheques are used. I've even seen them to pay for things at Market Stalls, where I'd normally expect transactions to be in cash.

I switched from BoI to KBC

Just read their "Important Information" where it says "50% Off only applies in the first year" so it must apply to the Home Insurance offer as Brendan said. Thank you.

I switched from BoI to KBC

Hi Brendan, thank you, that would make more sense, their site is a little confusing though as if you look at this page [broken link removed] They have two blue panels where they outline the rates, in the second one - at the bottom of the page- they outline the offer where if open a current...

I switched from BoI to KBC

I've been looking at KBC also regarding a switcher mortgage, the rates do look attractive but I notice on their "switcher" webpage they mention the offer "applies in only the first year", I haven't asked them yet but I imagine the rate would increase after the first year? has anyone else checked...

Appealing council contribution fees for a new build - Munster

Hi Macky18, you can try and but everyone has to pay these, I had to pay over €5000 myself years ago and not a service in sight (or site :-) ) either. It's very frustrating and really just an earner for the council. Best of luck with the build in any case.

NPPR disproportionate interest - paying principal only for now and taking a case?

I'm obviously missing something here but if you have paid the amounts owing - in Mat's case the €1000- by then end of August, then surely the penalities don't apply? I thought that was the idea of putting the August dealine in place. I know a relative of mine owed about €400 in missed payments...

Key Post Can I get rid of my credit card, now that I have a Visa debit card?

There are no transaction fees associated with an AIB credit card - this can help reduce bank charges, I purchase everything with the cc and then pay in full at the end of the month.

Key Post Laya allows you to cut the premium by designing your own policy!

Dublin66 thank you so much for the link, I've managed to reduce mine by about €600 for myself and my son. We went from an "Essential" policy to a flex250. Mine was up for renewal at the end of the month, just by using your link I've saved all the that money and still got cover I'm happy with...

I see www.irishtimes.com have picked up on it and are running a comment on it on their front page. Pigeons indeed.

Can client request part of file from solicitor 7 years ago?

Depending on what the subject matter was the file may well be shredded by now. I contacted a solicitor recently about what had a been a straightforward conveyancing 8 years ago and was told the file had been shredded. It wasn't a big deal for me, I was able to get what I needed elsewhere but I...

Local Property Tax: Curious why people haven't chosen the direct debit option.?

Don't like direct debits either, virtually impossible to stop in my previous experience so won't be using them anytime soon. I'll pay for the 2014 tax in 2014, not before.

Is air no longer free in garages

I think that euro is just a deposit! when you are finished with the air and replace the handle the euro will pop out - much like shopping trollies in the supermarket, I've seen that in a couple of places.

Paid about half quoted price for kitchen. Now they want more before they fit it.

I agree with Vanilla and her summary, I usually stay away from any kind of "observational commentry" on posts but I have to say I too am disheartened (but as another poster said - not surprised) by the heavy handedness of some of these responses, the OP is not "uptight", they are investing a lot...

Home Loss Assessor - did you use one?

Hello Everyone, thank you for your comments, I'll certainly think about using one -as per Dinny I think the damage is extensive and will be very costly to put right. Hi Mercman - I was told insurance companies appoint "loss adjusters" but claimants appoint "loss assessors"? perhps that's wrong...

Home Loss Assessor - did you use one?

For a home insurance claim - in this case an oil leak under the house - should we use a Loss Assessor? we've never had any kind of claim before and so have no experience with something like this, we have contacted the insurance company who have appointed a Loss Adjuster, but other people are...
