False complaint made about my driving, call from Garda

This is a strange one. Got a phone call out of the blue last Friday from a Garda. She said they had had a letter in complaining about my driving, on an evening five weeks previously. Woman said I'd blown the horn at her, had overtaken her on the wrong side of the road and that I'd given her the...

    Which Name a Star site?

I know that you can't really name a star but there are lots of websites out there, too many really, offering the opportunity to "name a star" . I did this before years ago to help a young child deal with her grief at losing her brother. Being able to look at the sky and point to a specific area...

Cistern so slow to fill, individual droplets rather than flow

This problem happens every few years for some reason. Toilet in main bathroom will go from fine to literally filling like teardrops after a flush, one by one, taking about 8 hours to fill. Eventually it rights itself over a month or so, any idea what it could be and what I can do to fix it now?

    Protests...enough is enough

Apologies, this is a mostly Dublin centric rant but I've been pushed over the edge! I'm an average citizen, with bills that only go up and income that's gone down and down for the past 5 years or so. Austerity hurts. But I was always taught to put your head down and work through it as best...

Woodies, B&Q or Homebase - where to buy paint & accessories?

Need to buy the whole kit & kaboodle for repainting the apartment. Gonna start with the bedrooms, they haven't been done in about 8 years and we ditched all the painting tools etc after we finished. So I need emulsion, ceiling paint, gloss, dustsheets, masking tape, rollers, brushes etc. All...

    Which paint brand?

Was in Woodies the other night and picked up colour cards. They had own brand, Dulux and Crown paints in stock. Am re-painting the master bedroom, it's currently an interesting shade of green so I plan to do a couple of coats of cheap magnolia first but eventually want a warm cream. I've used...

    TV for bedroom

Re-decorating master bedroom and after years of not having a tv in there I've decided it's actually pretty important. A second cable connection isn't going to work given the design of the apartment, nor is a dish/external aerial. Because of this I'm wondering if the best thing to do is get a...

Spanish contact (30) looking for best place to learn English during the summer

I've been contacted by the sister of a Spanish friend from years ago, she wants to come to Ireland to work on her English over the summer. Ideally she would prefer a host family, but she is older than the typical Spanish student, she's 30. She was asking about finding a summer job here but I...

2A (60's) VHI B. Renew 1st June, Want semi private acc for Bons Cork, alternatives?

Following my success in saving my sister 50% earlier in the year (thanks to here) http://www.askaboutmoney.com/showthread.php?t=175979 I have now been tasked with sorting out my parents' insurance. They have been with the VHI forever, unquestionably accepting renewal prices and increases but...

Best value small/midsize car at the moment

Currently driving a 04 Focus which I love, but is getting on in miles and wear and tear. Looks like the clutch is going so I'm pondering my options as to what to do. Do I invest 10% of the value in a car that's going to need annual NCTs from next year, car tax is about €400 pa, or possibly look...

04 Ford Focus - low power in low gears..bad news?

Have a 04 Ford Focus (1.6 petrol) with about 74,000 miles on the clock. Drove Dublin-Cork at the weekend and noticed that the engine was revving higher than normal at 100-120kmph, thought it was sluggish to take off too. On the way back I took a different route and had to go through a few...

Wine in Tesco, €8 is the new €6?

I know wine went up by €1 a bottle in the budget but I've noticed in the past month or so that wine specials that used to be €6 now start at €8. Anyone else see this?

entitled to the use of 1.5 car spaces: Unallocated spaces full most of the time

Our leases state that each unit is entitled to the use of 1.5 spaces (being one resident car and a share in visitor parking) in our development. We don't have allocated parking for residents or visitors but approximately 90% of the parking spaces are within the walls of the development (with two...

    Policy for Mum & Child

My sister just got her renewal from Aviva and now that she's paying for her 6 month old son, added to premium increases, her annual premium has almost doubled. Renewal date is 01-Feb. She's asked for my help as baby is teething and very demanding of her time. I spent three hours today on...

Where to buy Calgel (baby teething gel) in Dublin

Am on a mission to find this for my sister, for her badly teething baby. Other alternatives not working and normally placid baby is having a horrible time. Calgel was not available in Ireland for some years but apparently is now available in some pharmacies and supermarkets. Anecdotally I've...

    Where to buy blankets?

My sister has bizarrely asked for real blankets (not throws) for her wedding present. Am having trouble finding them in any shops. Has anyone seen any? Online I can only find woolen mills selling them and they look quite twee. Any thoughts? Thanks

Match for Michaela - do we need yet another charity?

Have been listening to coverage of tonight's match all week on the news channels/radio - it was pretty much impossible to avoid hearing about the match and the foundation. To be honest, I don't see why it merited so much coverage. The murder of Michael McAreevy was a tragedy for her family...

    Edinburgh for Hogmanay

Have flights and hotel booked for a girly 2 night break in Edinburgh - NYE-Jan 2nd. Have been watching the festival website and currently torn between the street party and the concert, waiting eagerly to see the concert line up. 80,000 tickets on sale for the street party, sounds like a lot...

Should the divorce laws be updated?

In the 90s when this country finally woke up to the reality that marriage doesn't always work out and voted to allow divorce in this country. After several failed referenda, usually full of "we'll be like America and England where people can get married one day, divorced the next and marry...

    New Year Trip ideas?

Hoping to head away for New Years Eve either as a short break or a week in the sun (we could cope with heading on New Years Day if we were going for a week) with a dear friend. It's an expensive time of year but hoping to avoid NYE at home for various reasons. I'm Dublin based and she's...
