The likes of MBNA will often be quicker to lend on credit cards than the traditional banks. So, if it's just for a car hire thing, perhaps it might be an option.

It's quite possibly the case. The shops may also opt not to accept international Maestro cards as there is possibly a % fee levied on transactions by Maestro/Mastercard that is not charged on UK...
