I will be spending approximately €5k on home renovation work shortly. I am not paying any tax at the moment as I am not working and I will be funding the cost of the work out of my savings.

I see that the HRI payment is paid by way of a tax credit.

As this will be of no benefit to me as a non tax payer is there any other way for me to claim this benefit?

No, this is purely a tax refund scheme. You can't claim a refund of something you don't pay.

If you start working and pay tax in 2017 or 2018 you will benefit from half the credit each year.

As above, just do the online paperwork now anyway with the builders and its there if yo get work in 2016
The initial HRI online paperwork has to be done before the work starts

Thanks. I am on a deferred pension that kicks in early 2017. If I get the work completed this year, would I be able to claim the tax relief next year when I start paying tax on my pension?

Yes iff the online paperwork is done correctly
