Is there a better option in VHI for Forward Plan Level 1 which is coming in at 2700+ per adult

We require
Hospital cover with no excess
Full cover for Orthopedics
Good day to day expenses

worn out from searching, did find Laya plan called Total Health Select which comes in around 1800 - its seems similar ?

If there was a cheaper Vhi plan similar to forward plan level 1 I think I would take it in favour of switching because I just dont know what to expect if I do ?

Many thanks, I hope someone can give me some guidance

Ok so, I have battled away with the HIA website and I cant find any reason why Laya Total Health Select should not be considered as a very good comparable option to VHI Forward Plan Level 1.

If I am missing anything vital I would appreciate any input before I make my first ever change in Health insurance provider in the next few days !!

Hi berryblue,

Before making a few suggestions for your family's health insurance renewal, there's a few details to clarify with you first.

1. What ages are both young adults?
2. As you are based in South West Munster, what hospitals would you most likely attend for surgery and would travelling to Dublin be an option to avail of the hi-tech hospitals?

Laya Healthcare would be best suited to your health needs, as they fully cover orthopaedic surgery in all private hospitals and hi-tech hospitals.
There are plans with VHI that would also suit you, only if you are prepared to travel to Dublin to either Blackrock Clinic or Mater Private for orthopaedic surgery. All other surgery would be covered in all private hospitals.
VHI Forward Plan Level 1 is way too expensive and not necessary, similar cover can be achieved for half the price.

Thank you Snowyb for your reply.

Our renewal is next tuesday - hence the frantic trawling through the net for alternatives

There are 2 parts to our policy, us 50 and 51 yr and the young adults 21 and 25 yrs. we currently have them on different policies to us with VHI but want to offer better hospital cover for them both.

I did look for the new laya simplicity, ideal simplicity and complete simplicity plans that you mentioned in a previous poster's thread as alternatives for our young adults, but they dont seem to be on their website yet

Our young adults are currently 25 & 21

they do not need to have the same level of insurance as us if we choose the Laya Total Health Select policy

We live in Bantry the hospitals we use are Bons Secours in Cork, South Infirmary, Cork, both used for orthopedic surgery, Cork Universtiy Hospital, Mercy University Hosptial and would like cover with no excess for the Mater Private Cork

If the need arose in the future ( hence our upgrading ) we would have no problem travelling for treatment/surgery for conditions that might arise in the future as we age

Many thanks

berryblue,

Laya healthcare would be a better option for yourself in particular, with orthopaedic health issues, as they fully cover this type of surgery in all public, private and hi-tech hospitals. No co-payments or shortfalls apply. The Mater Private Cork is classed as a private hospital with Laya and is fully covered for all surgery, it is not classed as a hi-tech hospital.

The following plan, Complete Simplicity' price 1380 per adult, is well worth considering as an alternative to Total Health Select price 1837pa.
They both cover public, private and hi-tech hospitals, identical cover. Private room in a private hospital covered. Similar outpatient day to day cover with a 1 euro excess.
The only main difference, is that 'Complete Simplicity' plan has an inpatient excess for private/hi-tech hospital admissions of 100 x 2 = 200 per year.
So, even if you had several admissions per year, max of 200 excess applies, so the total cost would be 1580pa including 2 x 100 excesses.
For 2 adults, it would mean savings of 514pa.

Total Health Select is a good plan that ticks all the boxes which may not be fully necessary in the circumstances.
Its also an option to choose a different plan for each adult, Total Health Select for yourself and Complete Simplicity for your husband, if it suits.

For the two young adults, 21 and 25, the following plan with Laya will suit both pricewise and hospital cover wise.
1. Simply Connect; price for 21 yr old 489pa, price for 25 yr old 891pa
Public, private and hi-tech cover included. Excess 150 x 2 max per year. Good day to day cover, 1 euro excess, max refund 300 per year.

So an overall family price of 4140 is achievable as follows;
2 x 1380 = 2760 Complete Simplicity
1 x 489 = 489 Simply Connect
1 x 891 = 891 Simply Connect

Laya do not apply any waiting time for upgraded day to day cover according to age, so this cover applies straight away from renewal date.
