Its that time of the year again and looking at renewals for parents & inlaws. Renewals coming in at:

1 x Flex 250 Explore €854
2 x Laya Connect Care 100 €1,228

One of the Connect Care members has been informed they may need a hip replacement, so am conscious of any switch not impinging on continuation of benefit nor any unforseen costs (ie excesses) though not against the idea.

Would appreciate any recommendations on cheaper likewise policies...

Thanks in advance

Hi suzie,

A good alternative to Connectcare 100 is Laya plan 'Simply Connect' price 999pa.
[broken link removed]

There is also full cover for listed orthopaedic procedures in a range of private and hi-tech hospitals, no shortfalls, no excesses on Simply Connect.
Simply Connect is on page 3 near the end of list.
https://www.layahealthcare.ie/media/site/pdfs/orthopaedic.pdf

Details of orthopaedic procedures covered as follows;
https://www.layahealthcare.ie/orthopaedic/

Just to note there is an outpatient limit of 300pa per person with this plan(50% of total 600 = 300. This also includes x-rays. ( MRIs are treated seperately, fully covered and not subject to the 300 restriction.

As regards, Flex 250 Explore, unless you take on a bigger excess or drop some hi-tech cover, there are no cheaper alternatives with similar cover.
1. Options with similar cover, bigger excess, Flex range: [broken link removed]
2. Options with reduced hi-tech cover: [broken link removed]

All the above plans are fully covered on the above orthopaedic list in hi-tech and private hospitals, no shortfalls, no excesses.

Hi snowyb,

Waited til the new Laya policies were comparable on hia.ie, but from what I can see Simply Connect still seems to provide the better balance between premium cost/excesses etc.. Is that your take?

Thanks
S.

Suzie,

First of all, there are more changes to come for the 1 January 2016, not sure if your renewals are for December or January.

For December, everything is upto date now. The Simply Connect plan is still best priced all round value plan that ticks all the boxes, which
includes good outpatient with a 1 euro excess.(although capped at 300pa) this cap includes x-rays, ultrasounds etc but MRIs are dealt with seperately, no cap applies. Maximum inpatient excess per year 150 x 2 = 300. Day case 50 per visit. No excesses or shortfalls apply to any private or hi-tech hospital for orthopaedic surgery.

However, if people don't like the cap of 300 for outpatient + x-rays, the new plan called 'Simplicity' price 1044pa is worth considering.
It has a maximum inpatient excess of 100 x 2 = 200 pa for private and hi-tech admissions. Day case for private and hi-tech hospitals 50 per visit.
It has good outpatient cover, slight bogey of 100 excess per claim but a minor blip in the over all scheme of things, no restrictions or cap applies. This plan also includes cover for a private room in a private hospital. This is very good cover at the price, if a private room in a private hospital matters. Orthopaedic surgery is fully covered, with 100 excess, no shortfalls apply in private or hi-tech hospitals.

Dear Snowyb - My husband's renewal notice from Laya has arrived yesterday. His current plan for 2015 is Flex 125 Choice - premium €1488, which if renewed for 2016 will be increased by over 10% to €1646. He's approaching 73 and has had problems with his prostate & glaucoma which will require laser procedure in the coming year. Wonder if the plans mentioned in this thread - or any equivalent - might be better? Don't mind foregoing private room in Dublin private/hi-tech hospitals. Had tried checking out HIA comparison site - which won't work on my PC. Thanks in advance, Allencat

allencat3,

I'm not sure if the laser treatment will be as a day case, or a full inpatient admission for a few days so with that in mind, the following 2 plans
both have a day case of 50euro, which is the same as Flex 125 Choice.

1. Simply Connect; price 999pa, same hospital cover as before, 150 x 2 maximum inpatient private/hi tech hospital excess per year, day case 50
per visit, good day to day cover, 1euro excess, 50% refund for gp, consultant visits, dental etc but max refund of 300 per year applies.

2. Simply Connect Plus; price 1099pa, same hospital cover as before, 150 max inpatient private/hi tech hospital excess per year, day case 50 per visit,
good day to day cover, 1euro excess, 50% refund for gp, consultant visits, physio etc but a max refund of 500 applies per year.

3. Simplicity plan; price 1048, same hospital cover as before, 100 x 2 maximum inpatient private/hi tech hospital excess per year, day case 50
per visit, includes a private room in a private hospital, outpatient cover has a 100 euro excess which is not ideal but not the worst, 50% refund
for gp, consultant visits etc - no maximum applies to outpatient refund.

4. Total Health Plus; price 1200, same hospital cover as before, 100 euro inpatient private/hi tech hospital excess per admission, day case 100
per visit, good day to day cover, 1 euro excess, 50% refund for gp, consultant visits, etc- no maximum refund applies.

[broken link removed]
Note; no excesses are payable in any public hospital, they only apply to private or hi-tech hospitals.

Plenty of savings to be made without losing cover.
