I got a quite authentic looking email today as I had some cards expired and my wife had been using the account etc and had some difficulty adding a new card. I rang Paypal and they told me it was bogus. Genuine emails will refer to you by name rather than email address. The link on the email brought me to this web address and I noticed suports instead of supports.

Dear email address,
We emailed you a little while ago to ask for your help resolving an issue with your PayPal account.
Your account is still temporarily limited because we haven't heard from you.

We understand it may be frustrating not to have full access to your PayPal account. We want to work
with you to get your account back to normal as quickly as possible.

What's the problem?
We noticed some unusual log in activity with your account. Please check that no one has logged in to
your account without your permission.

Take a moment to review your account information and recent transactions for changes or unknown
payments.

Case ID Number: PP-003-501-917-158

How you can help
It's usually pretty easy to take care of things like this. Most of the time,we just need a little more
information.
To help us with this and to see what you can and can't do with your account until the issue is resolved,
log in to your account and go to the Resolution Center.

As always, if you need help or have any questions, feel free to contact us. We're always here to help.

Thank you for being a PayPal customer.

Sincerely,
PayPal

Good spot. paypal-anything.com instead of paypal.com should be enough to alert you.

If you then want to check a site, look up its registration on a whois provided like http://whois.icann.org. Enter the site name and it'll tell you where it's registered and to who. Anything out of China, or hidden behind a private registrar should be avoided.

Any email that says anything about "limited", "suspended" etc is bogus basically.

Not always the case - I received an email from Skype recently to advise that my account had been suspended due to suspicious activity. The email was genuine, my Skype account had been hacked and Skype suspended my account until I could verify details with them.

Yahoo, Gmail, Facebook and others will also lock accounts and notify you via email if they detect suspicious behaviour on your account.
