Election date a big secret

Does anyone find this a farce? The government promised more transparancy in politics but yet are keeping schtum regarding the next election. By having the incumbent government set the date for the election, surely this gives them an unfair advantage? Would that not be a constitutional issue? Should the date not be set in stone?

It is not a farce. However, there will be an election and every government uses all means to gain strategic ways to win an election. The opposition, of course, has to counter and will do everything available to them too. It is not a constitutional issue. You cannot set the date in stone because governments fall quite easily when necessary.

My tuppence worth:- General Election to take place between mid November and mid December.

Im really looking forward to this election...
Rightly or wrongly we are going to see the traditional parties of FF, FG and Lab dominance eroded even further and might finally see a proper left/right divide developing.

I also like the excitement of the counts and the tallies... Seeing TDs of 30 years standing beaten and upstarts who couldnt get a council seat a few years ago top the poll...
The irish electorial count is the most exciting of all the democracies as far as I am concerned.

Once the date is announced Ill be booking an annual leave day from work the following day so i can enjoy the count... Whether it be Election15 or Election16.... bring it on...

I doubt it will be over the winter months, most likely the Spring when we will have the longer evenings. The dear boys and gals won't relish going out canvassing when its dark, cold and wet. I reckon it will be held sometime between Mid February/Mid March.

Paddy Power are giving odds of 1/3 on a November election - shortest odds by a long way for any month !

Well his market has a very high mark up, naturally as he must fear insiders. When the odds are "normalised" they come out at Evens November, 3/1 February, 4/1 March, 33/1 bar (November now 1/6)
