Hi all, this is my first post on this very informative forum.

I am single aged 48 with type 2 diabetes which thankfully is under control at present with medication but I am mindful of potential complications as I get older. My meds are covered under the LTI scheme.

I am a member of VHI with Company Plan Extra and I expect my premium on renewal on 1 January next will be circa €1,500. I like the good private hospital cover on this plan. I live in Roscommon so if needs be I can use the Galway Clinic for ease of access though thankfully to date I have not had reason to use it.

Could someone please recommend a cheaper alternative plan with good private hospital cover . If I could reduce my premium to €1000-€1200 it would be great.

Thanks in advance

Hi Offaly Exile,

Welcome to AAM.
Just to explain briefly, the Company Plan Extra you are on at present, has no private hospital excess. This means that regardless of how many admissions you may have to any private hospital, you do not pay anything on admission. This type of plan is usually recommended if a person
has conditions that may require several admissions to a private hospital per year for ongoing treatment etc. Thats why its more expensive.
The cheapest alternative plan with similar cover, no hospital excess is as follows;
VHI One Plan Extra; 1349pa

However, if you don't mind taking out a plan including a private hospital excess, there are a number of cheaper alternative options worth considering as follows;
VHI Options
1. Plan PMI 37 13; price 1011pa; similar hospital cover as before, including hospital excess 100 per admission, this excess does NOT apply to any public hospital. Limited day to day cover.
2. Plan PMI 36 13; price 1175pa; similar hospital cover as before, including hospital excess 75 per admission to private hospital only, this plan also has good day to day cover (gp, consultants, dental etc).

Laya Healthcare Option
1. Simply Connect; price 999pa; similar hospital cover as before, including private hospital excess 150 per 2 admissions pa, also including day to day cover - capped at 300 pa.

All the above options cover Galway Clinic and a range of other private, public and hi-tech hospitals.
NOTE; there is no guarantee that the prices quoted above will stay the same until 1 Jan 2016. So, it's advisable to double check prices nearer to renewal date. Also, there may be new plans released at that time - something to keep in mind before making any decisions.

Snowyb,

I received my renewal quote a few weeks ago for the VHI 'Company Plan Extra' policy and it was for €1524, renewal date 1 January 2016.

Following your suggestions of alternative plans I decided to go with the VHI PMI37 plan which will cost me €1076 for 2016.

This is a saving to me of €448 which I am very happy with. I am ok with the limited day to day cover on this new plan and the hospital cover is good for my needs.

Thanks again for your advise. You provide great clarity in what to the lay person is a very complex area made deliberately so by the providers.
