Forced to take annual leave when building is closed?

Hi,

I have a question. For the holidays, our building closes for a few days - as it does basically everywhere. On these days, we have to take annual leave.
Just to clarify - the building is closed, we cannot come to work even if we wanted to, and yet it comes from our annual leave, meaning we have to save several days leave for winter each year.
As well as that, coming up to christmas, we have to work half days, just until lunch time. This means we have to take the other half of the day, after lunch time, as annual leave.

Is this normal/legal???

As a final example, the building is closed on christmas eve, but we have to take it as a holiday.

I would really appreciate any advice on this topic.

It's perfectly normal for a company to have a shut down period and to require staff to take it out of their leave. Obviously any bank holidays and weekends would not be counted, In the case of this Christmas for example, assuming you have to take Dec 24th off as leave, then the other days that should count to your leave will be Dec 29th, 30th and 31st. All other days are either weekends or public holidays.

Do you think your employer should pay you when your place of work is closed, by arrangement, during a holiday period and not count it as annual leave?!
This post will be deleted if not edited immediately, no wonder the country is screwed!

Ah! Come On, Purple, Amy Marie just wants to work over the Christmas period including Christmas Eve. She has the best interests of her employer and customers at heart and obviously feels that she would serve her employer better by being available over the Christmas/New Year period.

We should be praising Amy Marie. Where is your Christian heart? Have you a heart? Afterall, the supermarkets will be open over the holiday period too. But, I think they should be closed, but I can't say it above a whisper because of the Sunday Shoppers looking in.
