Tax Relief on employer payment of Health Insurance

Hi,

I read in one of the Sunday papers a couple of weeks ago that if your employer has been paying your Health Insurance they have probably not been claiming the personal tax allowance on it. Now you obviously as a tax payer pay BIK on this.

However they were recommending that you could claim the personal tax allowance back yourself.

Has anyone every heard of this and if so know how you would go about doing this?

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Do you have to claim each year or once claimed the credit remains for subsequent years?

I used to get it automatically every year but since I starting filling in Form 12 for other liabilities I need to reclaim every year. If you are just on the payroll with no extras then it should be added each year. Revenue will send out your tax credits for the year each January and just make sure it's there.

now I know why I love this site... learn something new every day, form filled in and in the post! :)

i would like to ask another question about tax relief , currently i am paying 2500 net subscription for health insurance for myself wife and 2 kids . gross subscription is 2900 , 400 deducted by health insurer as each person is entitled to a 100 euro reduction tax relief or something but i pay the full amount as a self employed person for each person , am i entitled to any relief on this 2500 euro bill for paying other family members health insurance .i have no issue with paying for it but some tax relief would help , as we needed it a few times . i asked accountant she said has taken care of it but how ?

Your gross premium is €2,900. You get a tax Credit for €400 which is paid directly to the Insurance Company.

You are not entitled to further tax relief as you have already received it.
