Defamation does not have to be published.
If published and you can prove defamation you can sue for damages. (not to be recommended)
If verbal you will have to rely on your word v theirs , ie get nowhere.
Or have a 3rd party who is prepared to go to Court as an independent witness and confirm defamation to the courts satisfaction.(unlikely anyone will wish to get caught up).
In any event unless the alleged defamer has (funds) you will get nought.
You are obviously irate over this , but maybe least done is your best action? and hope things blow over.
Be very very careful not to say anything extra, in other words {shut up} because things have an unerring habit of escalating!
If things re-arise and don,t blow over , a well worded note from a solicitor might help ,( by well worded , I suggest explain you are hurt by alleged comments and would wish them to halt), but ONLY do that if things don,t cool.,
