One to watch for Skype users, especially if you use Skype credit.

I received an email yesterday from Skype to advise me of a "Skype to go" number. I had never heard about Skype to go. I wasn't named in the email, but they had my correct email address. I didn't trust the email, and took no action.

This morning, I received a second email from Skype, telling me that due to unusual activity on my Skype account, it had been temporarily suspended. This email named me, but being suspicious, I didn't click on any links. I went to their website, logged on, and found that my Skype credit (about €7) had been used up on 3 calls the previous day - 2 calls to Canada (to the "Skype to go" number as it happens) and one call to Uganda. All of the calls were made within 10 minutes of the time on the first email yesterday.

The calls stopped once my credit ran out - I don't have automatic top-up.
I have changed passwords, and had my Skype account re-activated. Not sure if I'll get my credit back though, trying to get through to Skype help centre isn't easy.

I'm a very infrequent Skype user, even more infrequent user of Skype credit calls and never use it outside my own home. My PC has anti-virus software, regularly scanned and updated. So I'm not sure how my details were obtained.

My advice to anyone who uses Skype credit is to watch for any strange emails (such as the Skype to go message I got yesterday), and to disable automatic account top-up, to minimise losses should anything happen.

I did have automatic top-up and was relieved of €120 over a weekend!
Fortunately,Skype had already refunded the money before I realised that it was missing.
Would your Skype login be the same as some other login that has been compromised?

Thanks for the replies.

Vandriver, I'm not aware of any other login that's been compromised (yet), I am checking all logins. I can't think of anything exactly the same as my Skype login.

I will scan for malware, thanks Páid.
