I crashed my 4 month old car causing it substantial damage. The insurance co. don't want to write it off but I am very reluctant to have it repaired as it has reduced in value. Can I insist on it been written off or where do I stand?

You are allowed to claim 10% (I think) of the repair costs as a depreciation cost. Unless your policy allows a "new for old" provision then you are stuck with a repair

Insist on and insurance co just don't go in same sentence: you are stuck with a repair

You can't claim depreciation in an accident where you were at fault. The purpose of insurance is to put you back in the position you were before the incident happened - i.e a repaired car. Future loss not their issue. That only applies where there is a third party who caused the accident.

Read your Policy. Some companies will replace the car with a new one, provided you are the first owner and the car is under 12 months old and the repairs are in excess of 50% of value of new car. However, as others have said, you cannot claim depreciation under your own policy.
