Hello,

I have been reading through the revenue website, trying to to get a crasp on VAT, but to no avail.

Could somebody please tell me how much VAT i would owe the revenue from the following business activities.

- built website 01 and earned: €1000 + €230 VAT (€1230)

- paid a developer in Ireland to help with website 01: €500 + €115 VAT (€615)

- built website 02 and earned: €1000 + €230 VAT (€1230)

- paid a designer in the Ukraine to help with the logo design: €500 + €115 VAT (€615)

- bought a new keyboard for my laptop in Ireland for: €30 + €6.90 VAT (€36.90)

- bought a new mouse for my laptop in the US for: €20 + €4.60 VAT (€24.60)

Thank you for your help on this.

So have you two laptops, one here and one in the US
or should it read
bought a new keyboard in Ireland for my laptop for: €30 + €6.90 VAT (€36.90)

bought a new mouse in the US for my laptop for: €20 + €4.60 VAT (€24.60)

Assuming only one lap top
its (230-115) *2 -6.90
The 4.60 is not allowed as a VAT deduction in the VAT 3 calc

Hello, sorry yes just one laptop.

Why is the 4.60 not allowed?

Mainly because you haven't explained yourself very well in the OP.

So Ircoha has assumed that you have paid US VAT (although in your defence, that doesn't exist).

In your Irish VAT return you must account for whatever Irish VAT you have charged (€460), and whatever Irish VAT you have suffered on your inputs.

Did the guy in the Ukraine actually charge you €115 of Irish VAT - I.e. do you have a valid VAT invoice from him for this?

Thanks, yes he provided a valid VAT receipt.

Q1 - So, if i buy something outside of the EU, i can't claim the VAT back, even with a VAT receipt?

Q2 - sorry last question... what happens if i took a total of €500 VAT in, but paid a total of €1000 in VAT (where do i stand then)?

A1 - Where you buy isn't relevant, as I've already explained to you - Irish Revenue want you to pay them the VAT that is relevant to them, which is Irish VAT. If a Ukrainian supplier charges you Irish VAT (which I find implausible to be honest) then you are entitled to claim it on your return. Generally though a non-EU trader won't/shouldn't charge you VAT, but you are obliged to pay the VAT at point of entry and account for it on your VAT return.

A2 - if you have been charged more VAT than you have taken in then you are due a repayment from Revenue of the difference.
