Hi I am hoping I can get some advice on this, I am a registered sole trader (plasterer) who is not VAT registered (under the threshold). I am currently setting up a totally different and separate business which will involve buying parts and supplying a service (cylinder testing). I will be charged VAT on the parts i purchase and so wish to register this business for VAT to offset.
My question is can I operate one business VAT registered and charge VAT and the other not VAT registered. I am thinking as soon as i VAT register with ROS I will be bound to apply it to both businesse. Any advice/ help on running two operations at once would be appreciated.

If both businesses are under the same sole trader then either they are both VAT-registered or they are both unregistered

To avoid this you could set up a company and operate one of the businesses through that
