Hi,

My mom is 54. She lost her job but to reach a pension she needs to work for the next 10 years.
She minds my daughter now and
One of my friends told me that I could hire her for a part-time and thanks to that when she reaches her retirement age she will get a basic pension. Is it true?
If yes, can anyone tell me where I can go to do that?Social Welfare,Tax Office? If she is going to be my employee, will I have to pay any taxes or prsi?
Thank you in advance for the help.

Is there not a way to buy your contributions. Perhaps ask the pensions office in Sligo or Donegal.

When did she finish work? I presume she drew jobseekers benefit after that, the best thing to have done then was sign for credits, for that she would have to have been still jobseeking. However if too much time has passed since she finished her benefit then she no longer has that option but worth checking. This is the only way I know of other than receiving a social payment to continue on accruing pension contributions while unemployed.

You could of course hire her but you would have to register as an employer, I would ask Revenue or a trip to Citizens Information office might be useful too to see what are the benefits and pitfalls of such an action.

Also look into how many contributions she already has paid, Cit Info will give you a form to send off for that info or you can ring or request it online directly. Then when you have that record Cit Info will work out for you what pension she is likely to qualify for with the existing contributions and how many more she should pay to bring her up to the max.

She may be able to pay voluntary contributions, depending on when she last had paid pr credited contributions
