Irish Life Health Daughter emigrating

Hi, Can anyone advise me on this question. I have a 23 daughter just finished her degree who is emigrating to take up a job in Manchester. I renewed her health insurance with Aviva in Feb when doing the rest of the family and when I had no idea that she would move abroad. I presume that this health insurance policy is of no use to her in the UK, or does it give her cover for anything over there. I pay it as an annual lump sum so can I cancel it or are there penalties involved for doing so mid-year that would not make it worthwhile? As you can guess my knowledge of health insurance is pretty limited, or limited only to the fact that it costs a packet. Any advise would be welcomed. thanks

You need to look at the policy document for the month u renewed to see what the rules are, they are set for a year but change every month so only that document can tell u re cancellation/cover/ uk cover etc.

What we did when our lad did the same was we cancelled our sons VHI IE policy and took out an international policy they offered while he was in UK for a year.
When he came back we just switched back.
At her age I would just go for min cover that will stop her loosing the no wait period and see what is available in the UK market, which should be much more competitive

She may have health insurance as part of her salary in the job. As she's now going out into the world and earning, is it not time for her to pay her own way? Just a thought.

Note that hosp care is also (nearly) free at point of contact in Irl, except for 100 AE fee and 75 pn in hosp.

So it's not expensive.

Yet 40% of the pop buy health ins, compared to 10% (?) in the UK.

The reason people buy HI is not money, it's the waiting times.

Thanks to you all for the advice. Will look into it but this gives me a lot to go on.

No doubt there are lots like her in Manchester so she should also ask them what to do.

There used to be drop in centres for people leaving Ireland in the main cities, they may still exist and could also advise you. In addition you can be sure the likes of VHI/Aviva have been asked and know the story.
