is my shower broken?

Hi,

My shower, in the past few weeks, has been stuck on warm to hot. The temperature knob still changes the temperature, however, in the past it would range from hot to cold but it now just ranges from hot to quite warm.

I have heard that it might be something to do with my water pressure and in fact the water pressure in my house is pretty poor.

Does anyone have a suggestion for how I can fix this?

Thanks,
Jim

Recently our shower at hot setting was unbearable hot. A shower specialist said our water pressure was OK but the problem was our poor water flow. he said to get Irish Water check flow from stopcock on pavement to main water main. If this does not improve matters then the problem is ours to try and sort out.

What make model shower, and how old is it? Is it fed from the mains or a tank in the attic?

What can happen with showers fed from a tank in the attic, with the recent hot weather, the temperature in the attic may have soared, raising the temp of the incoming water. The shower then further heats this.

I'm not sure if it is tank or mains fed. I think it's mains fed. It's a Mira aqua blue. It's about 7 yrs old. Our water pressure is quite low so perhaps that's having an impact.

Thanks for the input though.

Irish water are common over tomorrow to assess water pressure. I hope that will fix it otherwise I'm coughing up nearly €400!

Just an idea, but have you descaled, the head and hose. A build up of limescale can have the same effect.

Thanks novella. I haven't tried that but not sure if it will resolve it because it seems the water just won't go cool....it's not that it's not powerful enough. I think that perhaps because the water pressure for my house isn't great this could be affecting the shower units ability to go cool....

Irish water are checking pressure for me on Friday. If pressure is ok then I don't know what's causing it...

Anyone got another possible cause?

It's looking like I will need to fork out for a new shower and cost of installation but yet it seems like there might be a simply solution to this.

Hi,

Assume this is a new issue with the shower? Any changes made to your water system in the house that may have affected the water flow?

Can you check the filter coming into the shower unit (intake) to see it's it's clogged? & do the same for the outlet (again, within the shower unit).

Is it the original shower head being used or would you have changed that from the original?

Can you take off the shower head itself & see what the flow is like out of the hose itself?

If you can eliminate blockage / water flow - might be just that the shower has had it's day...

Checking the filters is a good call. With all the work on the water system at the moment, there is sediment getting into the system.

You sure it's a Mira Aqua Blue? I'm only seeing manuals for Creda AquaBlue. Those are mains fed, and require a minimum pressure of 1 bar/ 15psi at the input. IA lot of Irish households won't reliably receive this pressure, and from what you say, sounds like your house is one. In such circumstances a tank-fed shower is a better option.

Hi all

Thanks very much for your replies.

It is a creda not a mira - apologies.

It is looking like the shower has had its day and so I have bought a triton t90 tank fed to replace it.

Does anyone know how much roughly I can expect to pay to have it installed?

Thanks
Jim
