Hello
I am in the fortune position to have been able to pay off my mortgage early. My question is should I continue to pay a life assurance mortgage protection policy now that the mortgage is paid off? Or is it defunct anyway now that the mortgage is history? Should I take out anew life assurance policy instead?

Thanks for your help and advice.

Difficult to say without more info about your overall circumstances.
In general I would consider general life insurance/assurance separately from mortgage protection life insurance.
The latter is usually the cheapest bare minimum policy needed for the mortgage.
The former may involve more comprehensive level term cover.
The policy will almost certainly continue as long as you pay the premiums.

I'm 49 the mortgage protection life assurance policy -is- the bare minimum to cover the mortgage. It's only 18 euro a month. The amount insured for decreases year by year as the outstanding amount on the mortgage decreased. Now that the mortgage is paid off I wonder if it's worth anything at all?

It's usually worth whatever the mortgage would have been at this stage and on a continually decreasing basis until the term is up. Ask the insurance company for present level of cover. Check then to see if you can get new cover for better price, new cover at least wouldn't be decreasing but might be more expensive at your age, who knows!
