Fixing Plasterboard to internal walls

Hi all

Just wondering what the best method of slabbing walls; Is the old standard method of 2x1 batons the right way to go?

I have heard about the mushroom fittings and applying adhesive for fixing directly onto the walls?

Is it not advisable to have a gap between the wall and the board?
