Advice needed I went to the post office to lodge 350 euro into my bank account but was talking to someone as the cashier was doing it and just signed the slip to acknowledge the amount I never noted that the amt on the slip was incorrect it was for 3500 , my husband rang to tell me that he was getting paid for a garden job of 3 k and would lodge this into my account to pay off mortage arrears I went to the bank to withdraw 3 k and paid the mortage arrears with it , my husband has just informed last night that he still hadn't gotten paid for the job and I'm panicking now as I used the money lodged in error to pay off arrears but am worried now as the bank have taken the 3 k out of my account so my account is now in dr for a nearly 3 k I'm panicking as what happens if my husband for what ever reason doesn't get paid for the job or is delayed as has happened before hence the mortage arrears help !!!!

Okay,

Firstly. Don't panic. If you feel you are starting to. Sit down. Take a deep breath, count to 10 and let it out slowly. Then focus on breathing only until you calm down. Any response made in a panic is likely to be less than ideal so you will be in a better place if you are calm when dealing with this.

Secondly, it is a little difficult to read your post - it is written almost as a stream of consciousness so I am not quite sure what is going on. I think a clear timeline might help. Is the following correct?
1) You try to lodge €x to your bank account
2) The teller? wrote an incorrect amount on the slip - 10 * €x
3) This was applied to your account and your balance when you checked it reflected that amount
4) You spoke to your husband and he said that he was being paid €3000 and would lodge it to your account
5) You didn't inform the bank of the error or attempt to rectify it
6) You decided to withdraw €3000 from the account in anticipation of your husband lodging money
7) The bank noticed the original error and rectified it? (query - just to confirm, did they amend your balance by removing 9 * €x?)
8) Your account is now overdrawn
9) Your husband is still waiting on payment.

Assuming the above...

You will very likely get notification that your account is overdrawn. I would guess it would be safe to say they may be less than happy that you took advantage of their mistake. That isn't unreasonable, the best thing you can do is for your husband to chase the delayed payment.

In fairness, the error was at the Post Office, not the bank so the PO will have a difference in their books that they should be chasing to sort out. Regardless, the real issue here is the fact that the husband has not been paid. Assuming he does get paid then the OP will have an unauthorized overdraft which more then likely will incur charges unless the bank can be persuaded that the issue only happened because of the PO

Thank you for the replies I spoke to my husband re arrears on sun who said he was going to put 3k in my account when he got paid for work he done I lodged the money in the post office on Monday the teller in the post office made the mistake I have a slip stating 3500 not 350 ( I honestly never noticed the amt ) I checked my account on tues morning to pay a bill and saw my balance I assumed husband lodged the 3k went to the bank withdrew the 3k and paid mortgage arrears ( it's an an affordable mortage with conty council ) it was only when speaking to husband later that night he told me he still hadn't gotten paid I checked my account this morning wed and there is a overdrawn amt of 3000 , husband is chasing payment for the work done but im just stressed as work he has done previously has been late being paid etc also I have no problem paying this back but obv can't pay it back in one lump sum if husband doesn't get all money owed at once

So you had 3k mortgage arrears which you had agreed to pay by lump sum. The bank have got paid the cash as you took it from the PO. Therefor you owe the PO 3k now. Is that the scenario ? It's strange that the PO didn't notice the 3k was wrong whenyou went to withdraw it but either way you need to pay the PO 3k now and not the bank, right ?

I suspect the OP is stating that her bank account is now 3K O/D as the PO having realized the error subsequently corrected it and bank had to reverse the 3K. The surprise is that the bank have not contacted you yet! When they do just explain the error and that you will commence a repayment of the 3k when you're husband receives payment.
Thhre is little that they can do provided that you co-operate with them.

Ah thanks that's put my mind at rest yes I think the post office realized the mistake and reversed the transaction after I withdrew the cash from the bank , I don't have an overdraft facility which is why I'm worried incase the bank demand payment ASAP to bring the account up to a cr , I just hope that hubbie gets paid in one lump sum now to clear it if not I'm hoping that the bank will accept instalments
