Hi,

I want to put in a limestone fireplace with an insert stove. I have looked at lots of both and have finally narrowed it down to two options – the” balmoral” portugese limestone fireplace and wanders 60 square insert stove from lamartine or the “Brompton” Agean Limestone fireplace from Heat Design with a Stovax Riva 55 cassette stove. The first option is more expensive than the second (nearly €1000). Can anyone please advise – what the difference is between Portugese limestone and Agean limestone? The first option seems smoother, is one better quality than the other? We regard to the quality of the surround, is one considered better “craftsmanship” than the other? Secondly, with regard to the stove – the stovax is a multi fuel burner which I like, the wanders can just take logs.

I want to be sure we make the right choice…it’s a lot of money (either way) and we will be looking at it for a very long time! Lamartine have lovely showrooms but seem expensive and I have read online that there is no negotiation over price?

Any advice?

Thanks

We had the same dilemma a few years ago. The fireplace company advised us against Portugese limestone as it is soft and porous. They said it stains easily so if any smoke exited the stove when you open the door, it can stain the fireplace.
We went for an alternative cream marble and the Stanley Cara inset. Very happy with both.
Incidentally they had both in stock, so they were not pushing one over the other.

I am installing a a small Stanley stove. I do not have a fireplace and have to fit suitable flue
to accommodate it. Has anybody any experience about this method and how well it works.
I will be grateful for replies. Browtal

op I am not sure I can assist much with your question but can I clarify with you....

Is what your doing adding a stove to a fireplace that is already there?

My parents have a fireplace in their sitting room. Behind the fireplace is the kitchen. They were thinking of knocking in the wall from the kitchen so that the heat would come out into both rooms simultaneously - do you have any idea on whether that is possible.

Apologies it doesn't help at all with your question..

Just to say I have used Lamartine on numerous occasions and find them excellent.Talk to the owner Frank re pricing.

I know the OP hasn't posted back since, but for anyone else looking at stoves, we got the Stovax Riva and it's brilliant, so efficient, burns anything and is easy to clean. Looks great too.
