Problem with samsung grand duos battery draining

Have my phone over a year and a half now and was happy with it til a few months ago when the battery started not lasting a day and in the past few weeks drains very quickly. It can show 80% and then just die in minutes. I think it is down to updating the software to 2.2 this seems to be a common problem. Samsung tried to remotely look at it but because they couldn't get Kies working have said it needs to be sent back. I have bought a new phone not Samsung and am waiting for that to arrive before I can send it back. Anyone any suggestions in the meantime as it is causing me problems by dying when I cannot plug it in to charge.

1) Settings -> Battery -> and look at what are allocated the biggest percentages. You can reply here with a screenshot if you like.

2) Best -> Do a full factory reset and it should be back as new from the shop. Have a look online, the procedure is very simple. Then you can reinstall the apps, music and photos you need. Try it with the basic apps for a day or two before reinstalling everything as it is probably a bad application causing the phone to stay awake and draining the battery.

Take BACKUPS first of all your music and photos! Your Gmail account should sync phone numbers, calendar, emails, etc. and pull them all back when you login in again on the wiped phone.

I had a similar problem with my galaxy s3 mini a few weeks ago - battery life was deteriorating very fast (within a few hours). Phone just under 2 years old. I hadn't upgraded any software.

Bought a new battery and that solved the problem. I'm getting 1-2 days from a charge, depending on usage.

I searched online for solutions to my problem - one handy tip I read was to physically check the battery. If it appears to be bulging slightly then it needs to be replaced. Worth a look before you send your phone back.

I had a similar problem with my S5 recently - going from 100% to zero in an hour or two. Also happened after a software update and a factory reset had solved the problem -battery is better than ever now. It's a bit of a pain but worth it IMO.

Thanks for all the replies. I have checked the stats on the battery and it changes all the time google play was huge once time and lately android os is 94%. I have done the factory reset and clearing caches. I keep wifi and gps off have power saving on. I have ordered a new battery as I think it is bulging having done that test but I still think that something happened in the software update. I have just ordered a new phone not Samsung as I can't get Kies to work (see different post). I am trying to limp on as I only have one spare phone and it is not dual sim but the phone keeps going off even though it might have 80% battery. The only other thing I can see is storage as it says I need 3.96 to run system but only have 2.68 so not sure what I can do about that.
