Hi All,

My given birth cert name was, for example, Toni Williams.
But I was baptised Jane Williams, and never ever even knew that Jane was not on birth cert. Every single document my whole life has Jane. My name changed on marriage and I became Jane Ennis.

I just found out about the Toni thing recently. Do I need to do anything legally- for property, partnerships, children or pensions, inheritance issues, anything at all? Will it ever be a problem in the future?

Thank you, yes in Ireland.
So it has no implications at all? That's great.
Do I just keep a copy of the birth cert in case?

Have you a passport? And if you have, surely that must be in the name that is on your birth certificate? I am not sure that a baptismal certificate has any legal standing (unlike a birth cert)..

No, my passport, driving license and every bit of paper amassed has the baptismal name (name used whole life) and not birth name.

The Passport Office look for birth cert, not baptismal. Am amazed!! Though maybe I shouldn't be!

I never sent in a birth cert I don't think for passport, just the form, garda picture signed, and whatever was on the form re PPS and other IDs. My first passport was issued in 1990 or there abouts, maybe that makes a difference.

I had to have my birth cert changed just recently. I realised in 1980 when I applied for my first passport that my birth cert had the wrong given name. Back then my passport was issued in my correct given name when I produced my baptism lines and marriage cert. Fast forward 35+ years...my hubby applied for a private pension where I am named as a beneficiary. The insurance company would not accept my birth cert because the given name did not match my given name on our marriage certificate.

There is no problem, my mother had the exact same scenario all her life as the OP.

It is possible for the passport office to put a note in the passport, where the name is different on the birth cert, it's on the application form somewhere - but it's optional. If you are going to live abroad it might be something to think about.
