Hi,
We are two adults early 40s four kids under 11 and am thinking about taking out the laya flex 500 plan. My husband has Cover in sports injury clinic in santry on his existing plan with glohealth. I presume he still has this on switching? I haven't had any insurance in the last year.
We would like cover for mater private.
The cover for kids is 170 each on the flex 500 plan. Is there any cheaper option for them? They are in good health. Do I need cover for them in mater private etc.
Finally, I can't figure out how the excess works. Is it 500 euro per member or if it's a family plan is there any difference .
Thanks in advance!!!

Just to update i notice vhi have one plan family -kids half price and 4th child is free. Am considering going myself with kids on that plan and hubby going on laya flex 500. Works out a few quid cheaper. Any thoughts? (Snowyb? )

Hi leanbh,

VHI for the children and one adult is a good offer and the second adult with Laya, keeps the costs down.

VHI childrens plans;
1. One Plan Family; price per child 134, Private hospital excess 125.
2. Parents and Kids Excess; price per child 138; Private hospital excess 75.

VHI adult option; I would recommend plan PMI 37 13 as the private hospital excess is 75.
1. Plan PMI 37 13; price per adult 1011; public, private and hi-tech hospital cover.

LAYA second adult option;
1. Laya Flex 500 explore; price 630; private or hi-tech excess per visit 500.(including private hospital day case 500 per visit)
2. Laya Flex 250 explore; price 804; private or hi-tech excess per visit 250. (including private hospital day case 250 per visit)
3. Laya Flex 175 explore; price 899; private or hi-tech excess per visit 175. (day case private 75; day case hi-tech 175 per visit)

Just to explain about Laya Flex 500 Explore which is the plan you are considering for your husband. The hospital excess of 500 applies to each admission to a private or hi-tech hospital or a day case in these hospitals. Just make sure you think it through, to be sure it suits.

I included a couple of alternative options to consider with lower excesses.

As a further suggestion, if your husband is more likely to use the hospital than yourself, I would suggest that he switch to VHI 37 13 with low excess, 75, and you go with the Laya option. Since you were happy enough to drop it last year, it may be the wiser option. He will still have cover with Santry Sports Clinic as before with all plans listed above.

Wow that's fantastic information snowyb!
Just saw on hia website that laya is doing an offer from 13th April of pay only for first child on a couple of plans.
don't know if this would be any help to us?
We are very tight on funds this time round.
One other question re family excess. Does the whole family need to be on the one plan for that to apply?

The Laya offer in April would depend on your family's renewal date. What is their renewal date? What are the kid's ages?

No the whole family don't have to be on any plan, each person is treated as an individual for health insurance.
So, if one child or one adult for example has a stay in only a private or hi-tech hospital, they pay the excess that is only on their
particular plan on admission. If one adult is on a Laya Plan, only that person pays the 500 if admitted or on a day case procedure in a private
or hi tech hospital.

Hi snowyb kids had no cover last year either. The 4 kids are under 12. i Was thinking of going with laya for all cover but i take your point about the high excess per admission with laya explore 500.
I was thinking of laya explore 500 for us 2 adults and then maybe advantage 125 plus for the kids?
Or laya explore 500 for me, advantage plus for the kids and the vhi pmi plan u suggested. Is there a laya plancomparable to that vhi pmi plan?

Just to point out, if you drop cover for a year, you all will have to serve waiting times again - 26 weeks before cover applies, except for accident or injury. As you and the children don't have a renewal date, all of you can wait for the Laya offer from April 13th 2015.

A better option for the kids, as part of the offer is Laya Plan Flex 125 Explore; 246 total for all 4 children.
This plan includes cover for Mater Private and Blackrock Clinic which could be useful as they offer a range of childrens surgery. (the Laya Advantage range don't cover these hospitals).

The nearest equivalent to VHI PMI 37 13 would be Flex 175 Explore(899) or Control 150 Connect(974) - the hospital cover is the same but
the hospital excess amounts are higher. There would be no exact same plan with Laya.

Your husband would be restricted by his renewal date. He will have 14 days after his renewal date to make up his mind.

That's fantastic information Snowyb! Thanks a million. My husbands renewal date is 20 the march. I've decided to go with the following;
Flex 175 explore for hubby
Flex 125 explore for kids (starting 13th April)
Flex 500 explore for me.

Thanks again for your help. It took me all day to (nearly) figure it out!!
I'm aware that the excesses are pretty high but at least it gives us some protection. Now we better not get sick!! :eek:Cheers.:)

Good choices! The children's offer is really good value and you're lucky to be in a position to avail of it.
Your own renewal date will also be 13 April 2015, same as kids, one adult on the policy with kids, with same renewal date.

Your husbands renewal will still be 20 March 2015.

All the best, Snowyb

Snowyb, would it be fair to say that the main difference is in the excess, between Flex 500 Explore and VHI PMI 37 13?

Yes, and it(500) applies to both inpatient stay and day case procedures in private + hi-tech hospitals.

Just to ask another question!! If hubby breaks cover from March 7th to April 13th is there a problem. Will he still be covered on April 13th everything after that date.

One other thing i cant find inline any info re payments for orthapaedic procedures under laya 500 explore or laya 175 explore. Does anyone know are there exclusions foe these?
I was onto lays but they didn't know and said they'd get back to me!
Thanjs

Hi leanbh,

Yes, your husband will still be covered for everything from April 13th - there's no problem. Once there's not more than a 13 week break, its ok. If it went more than 13 weeks, you would have to serve waiting times all over again.

Re co-payments for orthopaedic procedures; According to Health Insurance Authority info, for private hospitals there is no excess or co-payment charged for these 5 listed procedures except the Galway Clinic. These 5 procedures relate to hip and knee replacement surgery.

Note, Flex 175 Explore is a fairly new plan, so its not yet on the above list, which needs updating.

For all other orthopaedic procedures, I would assume the normal excess, 175 or 500, would apply per inpatient admission, 75 or 500 per day case.

These 5 procedures are also fully covered, no excess or co-payment applies in the Blackrock Clinic or Mater Private. Co-payments apply in
the Beacon Hospital as per above link.
For all other orthopaedic procedures in these 2 hospitals, the excess of 500 or 175 plus the 200 per night shortfall would apply.
Other procedures in Beacon Hospital just have the 500 or 175 excess, no nightly shortfall applies.

Thank you again snowyb !! I spent the best part of two hours trying to figure this one out. You are very helpful.

I'm looking into doing something similar to this but I thought there had to be an adult on an a health insurance plan with children?

So, in this example, one of the parents would have had to go on the Flex 125 Explore plan with the kids?

Hi polaris,

No, as long as there is an adult on the policy, its fine, children can be on a different plan to adults, with the same provider.
In fact each person on a policy could be on a different plan, if it suits, according to their needs.
I know in the above case, to suit the Laya offer, all the children will be on the same plan. Pay for first child, and the rest of the
children go free. The adults do not have to go on the Flex 125 Explore plan, they can choose whatever plan they want individually.

Hi Snowyb - Thanks for your reply.

I just rang Laya about this and, according to the sales rep I spoke with, two separate policies would have to be created.

Policy 1: One parent + children on the Flex 125 Explore plan (According to him - children can't go on their own plan without an adult policy holder on that plan).
Policy 2: Second parent on the Flex 500 Explore plan.

In view of what you wrote above, am I misunderstanding something here or does this sales rep have it wrong?

The sales rep has it wrong.
There is no requirement for an adult to purchase the same plan as children in order to avail of the kids offer.
The adults can choose any plans from the full Laya range of plans.

I confirmed this info with the Health Insurance Authority.
Hope this clarifies things.
