Paying for gas leak?

Hi, not sure if this belongs here or on the tenants rights board!

I moved into a rental property in October, we discovered a gas leak in February which is since fixed.

The leak was after-meter and was 10 millibar over 2 seconds - which is apparently ridiculously high.

My question is does anyone know if I can do something as regards paying for the extra gas? Is it on the gas company as a write-off, or the landlord for not maintaining the system... or is it just tough luck?!

Also, does anyone have any idea what that might have cost me over the 5 months?

Thanks in advance,
DS

How much was your gas bill over this period of time excluding the standing charge?

2 Oct 2014 to 8 Dec 2014
- Gas usage:1,723 kWh @ 5.05c = €87.02
- Standing Charge 68 days @ 25.48 c = €17.32
- Carbon Tax: 1,723 kWh @ 0.37 c = €6.38
- VAT @ 13.5% = €14.95

Total €125.67

9 Dec 2014 to 6 Feb 2015
- Gas usage: 2,895 kWh @ 5.05 c = €146.20
- Standing Charge 60 days @ 25.48 c = €15.29
- Carbon Tax: 2,895 kWh @ 0.37 c = €10.71
- VAT @ 13.5% = €23.25
Total €195.45

€321.02 (€288.41 w/o SC)
from 2/10/14 to 9/02/15

Heating was barely on until late November, it was on an average of 4 hours a day throughout that billing period, at no. 2 (of up to 6 on the boiler... whatever that means!). Gas cooker, average use. Never used water heater.

This is the first property I've been in with gas, so I have no frame of reference of wether this is expensive or not, but if I was being charged for a massive amount of gas we weren't using I'd like to know where I stand!

I am curious how you knew/found the leak.
My bills have rocketed recently and I am trying to find the cause, had someone out to look at the boiler and service it and said everything was fine.
My last bill for a 2 bed, out at work all day, normal usage in the evenings and weekends, my bill from mid Dec to Mid Feb was over 400 euro

If you think you have a leak, then note your reading on the meter and then check again 12 hours or so later without using the gas.

Yes I got a key at the weekend for the meter box will be checking it over the next few days.

The gas is on a timer, 1hr in the morning for showers, couple of hours in the evenings 7-9, cooking and the occasional ad hoc boost at the weekends, depending on if I am home or not, how cold it is etc. it has been like this for a few years now, so my usage patterns havent changed dramatically, if the meter is running when the gas is off - what next? Plumber that was here last week said there is no problem, is it a case of find a different/better plumber or is this something that would not be covered by a normal service?

Your bills are lower than mine (3 bed end terrace, similar usage).Mine was 4700 kWh.

I've been comparing usage and costs since repair and it does seem to work out ok. I don't get that, but not going to complain!

The RGI that came was horrified, so I thought maybe gas was heavily seeping out and costing us way too much.

If they're reasonable bills I'll drop it!
