Planning a weekend in Rome but cannot decide between airports - very little difference in prices but also flight time are very good with both. Reviews are very varied so getting no where in trying to decide. Ciampino is Ryanair and Fiumicino - Aer Lingus. I have no problem flying with either airline just the convenience the other side I am interested in. Which have the best transport links to city centre?

I've no exerience of Ciampino but on Rome Fiumicino, there are trains - the Leonardo Express - every 1/2 hour to Rome Statione Termini. [broken link removed]. Be sure to buy your tickets from the ticket machines as some of the kiosks in the airport sell the same tickets but add a service charge. Otherwise it's plain sailing. Just follow the signs to the train station.

Fiumicino more accessible to rome centre with Direct train link.
Ciampino, need to get a bus to train station or taxi.
If cost is no issue, fly to Fiumicino

Fiumicino warning, many times the check-in process can take an extraordinarily long time, without wanting to be prejudiced to any nations workers but they seem to work to rule in that airport at least. Post check-in the amount of stores, restaurants etc is excellent. I used recently for flight change and found it one of the easier options over London or Paris or even Amsterdam.

I found Campino excellent. The bus leaves regularly from the airport and are at the main bus terminal very quickly.

It's a few years since I was in Fiumicino but baggage collection was like a zoo! I would try the smaller airport and get the bus next time.

"Ciampino is Ryanair"

This is a few years back, flew late into this airport and our hotel was only 2kms down the road, our friends left on the bus serving the city.

My wife and I approached the taxi driver rank and this 20 year old max guy walked from among the taxi drivers and when we said the hotel (2km away) we were told €20. He called over a taxi driver and we said €20 is very expensive and then he said "Okay, €30!" and mumbled something colourful (I suspect) in Italian. I was shocked and walked away. We quickly realised we didn't have a clue where we were. I was just about to swallow my pride and head back to the taxi rank and pay god only knows what when a taxi (still within the airport) drove by and I waved them down.

He also said €20, and so relieved I paid him a €5 tip when we got there. With that said he seemed a little the worse for wear.

It was a VERY disappointing experience and not one we're likely to allow ourselves to be exposed to again.
