Any recommendations on the best Wi-Fi enabled central heating thermostat. Everything I have been reading about the NEST system looks great. However I have just read the reviews on the App Store and since Google purchased NEST the app seems to be almost unusable now with many bugs. Anyone out there with the nest ....... Are you having these problems ?
Are there other Wi-Fi enabled thermostat systems that people would recommend ? Thanks

Hi landlord, I use Climote which I love (but Im probably not technical enough to say if it fits your needs)

the last time i mentioned it on a thread (no connection) another poster Leo recommended "LightwaveRF WiFi link and a three way relay module" - might be worth searching the forums?

Thanks Steph,
Still hoping someone has the NEST system and can review it for us. Electric Ireland are giving this system away for free.

I went with the LightWave option because it gives me a lot more control. I don't have a set or typical routine, so the prediction the Nest uses wouldn't suit me. With the TRVs, you can control it right down to a room by room level as well. It also give me one app/interface to control lighting and power around the house also.

Bought the NEST and had it installed yesterday, so far so good. Will update in a few weeks.

Good stuff, hope it works out for you.

I'd be interested to hear how the learning aspect works out. Now that they're Google owned, I wonder will they start to integrate the data they capture from your browsing/ email/ android activity to help make it more efficient/ effective. Like could it figure you're away from flight or hotel confirmation emails and turn the heat down until you return, could it time it so the house is warm when you return from work based on your phone's movements...

Hi Leo,

This looks like a really interesting solution. May I ask if you installed during a new build or did a retrofit on an existing house? Also, did you go the whole hog and replace all sockets, light switches etc. I'm trying to determine the cost of a full retrofit which in simple terms seems to be socket plates, light switches, radiator controls and the cost of the wi-fi unit....does this seem reasonable?

Lastly, do you know someone who will install this in Ireland?

Thanks in advance.

I retrofitted it in my place. The light switches and sockets just replace the ones you currently have in place. So long as the patress boxes the light switches are attached to have space for a regular dimmer switch, they'll fit.

I only replaced a few items so far, focusing on the heating, living room, and main bedroom lights. I don't really need remote control of everything, so the phased approach of automating function by function works for me. There is no additional wiring required, so the cost is just whatever units you decide to buy.

They're really easy to install, but if you're not comfortable doing them yourself, any electrician will be able to do it.

I got a few items in B&Q (the Siemens stuff they sell is compatible, Siemens have licenced the Lightwave technology). The other items I got in Maplin.

I'm afraid I installed everything myself. Replacing switches/ sockets is quite straightforward though, if you can wire a plug....you're almost there. Two way lights will be a little more complicated, and note you will need to get a slave lightwave unit for the second switch, the normal ones sold are master, and you can't wire two masters to control two-way lighting. It'll be simple work for any electrician though.
