My current insurance is with Laya and is Total Health Complete coming in at 2290 for a couple renewing 1st March. I would like advise on similar cover maybe with less excess for private hi tech hospitals. The current excess is 200 euro per day which I initially thought was not too bad but have recently spoken to a number of people who have ended up in private care for a long period. I could not afford 200 per day for more than 5 or 7 days. Because of our age I want orthopedic cover and ophthalmic cover and hubby had a heart attack a few years ago. i would rather not lose any inpatient cover that I have as would have to build it up again. Any thoughts/ ideas appreciated.

Laya Total Health Select has no excess for private hospials I think but would work out more expensive than your current plan... approx 3000e for a couple.
But it's a very good plan, ticks all your other boxes if you can afford the higher premium.

Comparison here of your current plan versus some other Laya ones...

If that's too pricey, you should check out the Laya website "Create Your Own Plan" option and pick the lowest excess amount that you can.

Laya Healthcare will increase a number of plans from 1 March 2015, but they are ok for allowing you to renew a few days before
so as to avoid the increase.

The lowest excess per day for hi-tech hospitals with Laya is 175per day.
The Laya plan Connectchoice 1100pa is worth considering. Note; this plan will increase to 1225pa from 1 March 2015 so to avoid
this increase you would have to renew before this date.

After that, plans with no daily hi-tech excess are at another level, starting price at 3075euro per person.

Thanks will have a look at these over the weekend. just disappointed with the daily excess but couldn't honestly afford much more for a policy.

This is all so mind boggling. i have spent days trying to compare and am no wiser and have to choose as insurance renewal 1st march. If I take insurance with lower excess or shortfall and am hospitalized do i have a waiting period for this excess or shortfall.

There would be a waiting period of 2 yrs (before the lower excess or shortfall amount would apply) if you were admitted with a pre-existing condition only. If you were admitted with a new condition there would be no waiting until lower excess or shortfall would apply.

This mainly only affects the hi-tech hospitals Blackrock Clinic or Mater Private.
Cardiac surgery and Orthopaedic surgery in these hospitals are not affected by the shortfall difference as they are fully covered on both plans, no shortfall applies. The 200 excess would apply if surgery was for a pre-existing condition, 125 excess would apply if surgery was for a new condition. After 2 years 125 excess would apply and 175 shortfall would apply.

Private hospitals are not affected. Excess is 125 on both plans. No shortfall applies to semi private rooms.

If you are considering Laya Connectchoice, note this plan will increase in price from 1st March so you will have to renew tomorrow or Saturday in order to avoid the increase. Explain this when making the call to renew, that you are renewing early to avoid the increase.

Hope this explains things a bit clearer.
