Which types of credit cards are used in Ireland?

I'd like to know what credit cards are most commonly used in Ireland (or Dublin in particular) for online purchasing?
I'm not looking for exact figures, more just looking for an idea or educated guess.

Would American Express be used by Irish people?

AMEX would probably be used for Corporate expense accounts. Bulk of transactions would be MasterCard and Visa

Visa and Mastercard are the most widely used. Amex would be less used as it isn't currently issued by any of the main banks in the country.

Aren't Debit cards also used a lot now in online payments e.g. Visa Debit replacing Laser. Something to watch out for.

No. Discover is basically a US based program, so you would find limited acceptance outside the US.

Most Irish people use Visa or Mastercard, but most places take Amex. Car hire, restaurants, hotels, shops. But not all shops.

Actually a discover card in Europe can be used anywhere where diners club is accepted. However no bank in Ireland issues Discover Cards.

The OP was asking more about online purchases. Even Diners Club has very little acceptance in this country anymore outside of hotels/restaurants. Online, a Discover or Diners Club would be practically useless.
