I've been with 3 since 2007 my latest contract is up in February I want to cancel it but have been informed that I'll have to give 30 days notice. Surely if the contract is up you can cancel without notice?

What do your terms & conditions say? 30 days notice period would be common enough.

30 days notice is the norm.

+1 for CiaranT advice. Absolutely no point in arguing as 30days is in the contract

30 days notification would be the usual BUT if you can prove that you didnt get the service that 3 promised you then you might be able to wriggle out of the 30 day notification .

Say they prommised you X megabite bb and you only got y megabite then you could argue with them that you didnt get the service promised and the service you paid for.
Do a couple of BB speed tests and take a picture of the results, then email the results to 3.

You can do this with UPC and even the UPC staff will freely tell you this.

A difficult argument to make stick after 7+ years with the service unless there is a history of logged complaints.

How can you look up the contract when they always make verbal contracts on the phone?

That's what I was thinking, I made one contract 8 years ago and kept renewing it. I suppose I'll have to give the 30 days notice and get finished of it.

But each year would be classed as a new and therefore seperate contract.

If BB speeds were up and down a few times in a month, you could easily argue your case with the service provider.

Do a BB speed test on your PC a few times over the coarse of a few weeks, take some pictures of the speed tests and then if the bb speeds are alot lower than what you were promised then use the pictures to argue your case.

It does work,as I know 2 people who have done it successfully with their service providers.

Why don't you just give notice now ?

30 days is a very short period of time, when all is said and done. Also, you mention your contract finishes in February, but don't say what date... if you take 30 days from today, you still finish with the company in February so is there actually even much of a difference ?

Unless you agree to a new contract period, once the original term expires, you do not move on toe a new contract period each year.

Why would they go through this when they can just give the 30 days notice now?

When my contract was up they used to phone up and give me a better deal, last time I told them that I was not tying myself to a new contract, anyway its a bit one sided when it is only verbal and you do not get to study it in detail. I do not have DD so they cannot take what they like out of my bank account.
