Selling Shares

Hi,
My Dad bought shares many years ago through a stockbroker and theses shares have sat there ever since – they are now worth about €23,000. I know nothing about share dealing, but the stockbroker has all the details, etc.. regarding his shares.
He has not been well recently and now needs to sell these shares to fund his care – I looked this up and found that the stockbroker will charge a 1.25% commission on the sale of these shares ? Does he have any other way of selling his shares without incurring such costs ? Any help appreciated.

Thank You.

In short, NO.

If he had certificates, you might be able to do a better deal, but if they are in broker nominee account then there is little your father can do. You cannot sell the shares, as they are your father's property.

My husband would like to sell some CRH shares and he holds the certificates. Would it be best to transfer half into my name to take advantage of the annual tax free allowance.
Could you offer any advice on how best to sell them and with whom. We have never dealt with sale before.
Thanks for any advice Browtal

married couple have double CGT tax free allowance, so no bothers there. He will have find a broker and send the certificates to them BEFORE they will sell. The registrars, name and address on back of certificate, probably do a special rate for the share sale. Write/phone them to enquire?

We had been planning on selling some CRH shares which we have held for many years. We
had plans to make some home improvements with this money.

Could anybody give advice on whether it is a bad time to sell now that they are in the process of
make more acquisitions. I see that their shares have increased by 10% in the past week. Are
their shares likely to increase as a result of this purchase?

I would welcome a discussion on this

Browtal
