Is everyone else's car insurance on the rise?

Bit fed up today as I have just got my car insurance renewal quote.

Background: I am 40 and drive a Group16 car. Have been driving since 1995 without any accidents.

2 years ago my insurance went from approx €550 to €800, and I had to move to 3rd party for the 1st time in my motoring life to get the quote back down to €590.

Then another year of trouble-free motoring.

Quote today is €880. Called them up and the best they can do is €840. Only 1 other insurer available to change to and they are €788.

I asked why my insurance is continually rising when I never ever claim. Always get the "they're all rising, its terrible". My response of "its time you hammered those that crash instead of those that don't" usually falls on deaf ears.

Now got to the stage when I feel I have to sell on my old classic car that I have put so much time and money into and buy a regular 1.1 Corsa or something, just to try to save some money.

Anybody else having similar issues? Is anybody's insurance actually decreasing?

There is another post on here but i cant find it if i do i'll post the link.

It was about someones policy being reduced by having a named driver on it. Maybe this would work for you. I felt i was done since i have my mum on my ploicy and it stayed the same and didn't go down.

But now hearing your story I dont feel so bad that it stayed the same as it could of been more expensive.

Something worth looking into anyway, anything to save a few pennies!!

Samantha, thanks for the reply.

Forgot to mention that part of the reason for getting a reduction last year (as well as going 3rd party) was adding my wife who has her own car and policy.

This did help but obviously not this year!

I know its never going to happen, but if you look at people who crash, they are in the monority of drivers. So when all the insurers are doing their numbers, if they need to raise €x billion to cover next year, why not exclude those who haven't crashed and then divide the total by those who have, and increase their premiums accordingly?

Am I dreaming?

Got my renewal a few months back and it had risen to E518 from E440 (I think) Got some online quotes and I just couldn't believe what I was getting. Quotes as high as E800. I'm driving a 1.6 car, no claims ever, no penalty points so I was shocked. I eventually went with 123.ie for E317 fully comp and bonus protection. I think it's about time insurance companies started giving some breaks to claim free drivers!!

mine was 484 last year and was quoted 688 this year.
I phoned them and said I hadn't become more of a risk this year and if anything it should have reduced.
I guess we are being asked to pay for their stock market losses.

I always thought insurance was based on the risk?

Needless to say , I won't be going with them. I've got a quote for 588, still 100 euro higher than last year:mad:

Have no connection with them apart from i have a policy but have you tried FBD for a quote? That's who i have mine with, and although i was expecting a reduction ( even €20 would of been nice) because of another year of no claims, at least it didn't go up.

I priced around a few other and they still came out cheaper.

Thanks for all the replies.

For info, I drive a 1991 sports car.

So thats an 18 yr old car worth a few grand at best. I am 40, heading on to 41. Driving 14-15 years. Never had a crash or even come close.

So if its all based on risk, then how can my premium keep rising?

btw, Group 16 is the insurance group of the car. They tend to run from 1 to 20. 1 being a 900cc piece of junk up to Group20s which would be high powered sports cars that would be considered risky in terms of theft, crashing, speed machines etc.

Definitely going to shop around and hopefully get the chance to tell my current insurer to beat it.

shop around

As ever, it's the key. Phone absolutely everyone - although prices have taken a hike pretty much across the board there are 'relatively' good deals around. My wife is shopping around at the moment - differences of €300+ are coming up so far.

I moved to Tesco Insurance and I have to say that I get an acceptable premium every year. However I do drive a 1.4 Citroen, a fairly bog standard car. I also have no penalty points, do little annual mileage and I am within a certain age bracket. I think that certain insurance companies cherry pick certain categories of driver and car.

I've never seen cars listed or categorised this way and haven't noticed any reference to insurance groups when insuring cars down the years.

I have friends in England who refer to insurance groups, but to the best of my knowledge (as a consumer) these aren't used in Ireland by insurers or underwriters. I wish they were as it would simplify the process of getting quotes come renewal time.

I'm sick of being told by brokers, on-line quotation systems, phone-centre "help-line" staff and so on "There is no such car, it's not in the database" as the car I'm looking at on the driveway and requesting a quotation for or being told that "No-one insures those cars". If its anything other than a 1.2 VW Polo they're at sea.

Car insurance seems to be on the rise alright. My 01 1.6 fully comp went up from €325 last year to €520 this year 60% increase !!! ( no claims ever 30 years driving) . When I checked around best I could get is €397 which is still 22% up.

My wifes car which has her, me our son (20) all with full licences also went up. Last year we also had my daughter who's 23 provisional on too and was €990 then for the lot. This year it's just the 3 full licences ( daughter gone off it ) and it went to almost €1,100 . So that's a provisional driver gone and still up 11%. Best I can get so far is €924.

There is a marked rise in all motor insurance it seems.

My insurance came down this year by appox. 140euro - but only by shopping around. My renewal quote with last years insurance company would have gone up slightly ... by 30 euros - in spite of having no accidents and not changing my car.

Perhaps insurance groups is a NI term - I moved from there a few years back.

But there has got to be some sort of consideration of the car when they are quoting you - perhaps they use insurance groups without ever telling you. After all, there's no way you will insure a 1.1 Corsa for the same price as a 2.5 Merc, so obviously IGs must come into it?

Also to add to my original details, got ZERO points. So it makes me more or less a fairly safe bet for an insurance company.

I'm thinking its maybe time for the sports car to get put into storage and perhaps switch over to a little runaround. I do very small mileage every year and can't really justify high premiums, or high fuel costs now.:(

We had a Honda CRX. A little beauty with extremely low mileage. Probably doing 3000 miles per annum. It was one of those cars nobody wanted to insure and when they did it was very costly. I am sorry now that I didn't put it in to storage rather than trade it in as we got a poor price for it.

It is a pity that you cannot get 5 day insurance or weekend driving insurance. A family member spends 6 months of the year in Spain where he has a little runaround. So he ends up having to pay two full year car insurances and two full year car taxes for two cars that he only uses 6 months of the year.

Don;t think I'll be selling it. I have spent too much keeping it on the road over the last decade, as well as servicing it. I know its a good, well maintained car and I would not get any value out of it by selling it. Would be lucky to get a grand for it probably.

So will put it away and then bring it out in a good while when its worth a fortune !!!!

My car insurance has gone down. I'm paying 296 euro for fully comp on a 06 3 series BMW (2 litre). Mine is a special group scheme through my union.

That sounds very cheap for your car.

What age are you? Who is the insurer?
