I'd like to find one of these legends, in the Naas area.
Or any plumber who does a decent job and does not charge €90 for ten minutes work.
Any recommendations?

In fairness €90 per 10 mins includes the 1/2 hour it took to get to you, possibily call back, take the phone call etc etc.

Travel & phone expenses are tax deductible, time taken to drive to a job would not be seen as an issue if there wasn’t such an amount of work available out there,

My polish gardeners drive to my house and still manage to charge a fraction of the last gardener!

If they are not doing the job properly that's one thing but you are paying for expertise and time. Time on the job and time taken to get to you and back. And don't forget materials/parts. I don't think €90 is that excessive really. You'll probably find you will have to pay a minimum of €60/70 to get any tradesperson to even look at a job - before they lift a finger.

True, but they're still expenses! Anyway, it's the time taken which is the key factor here. Four 10 minute jobs could involve hours of travel time. If a tradesman doesn't factor in this time, they won't last long.

In reply to the question, I'd be happy to pay €50 for a small plumbing job that takes 10-20 minutes.
Regarding travel, I am looking for a local tradesperson. Naas traffic is bad, but it doesn't take 30 mins to get anywhere unless you walk.

If it's a small job you would be better just getting a 'handyman' - probably advertised in local paper.

I recently wanted to get a radiator swapped over to a heated towel rail. I called a number of places for quotes. I got (I think) a Polish guy, certainly eastern European, I didn't ask him. He was considerably cheaper, and did a good job. Even though the job took considerably longer than expected, he didn't expect any more than his initial price.

hi bamboozle et al,
any chance of passing on details of yr polish gardeners? am in dublin 6w and need a garden job done over coming weeks.
thanks, stan

plumbing systems in Poland are different from Irish systems, thats why there aren't many, recent foreign national Plumbers or Electricains. although its only a matter of time before there are. Anyhow equal pay for all, don't exploit our European brothers and sisters!

A lot of these East Europeans have replaced the erstwhile Paddy nixer types claiming to be gardeners etc but are nothing more than black economy reps, some of whom might be good at cutting hedges, lawns and blowing fallen leaf etc. The East Europeans are hard workers and mostly good honest tryers. However I've encountered plenty of incidents where plants(trees/shrubs) have been cut without exception. Admittedly cutting is neat but disastrous if there is no distinction between trimming/pruning and cutting. Try explaining what needs to be pruned as distinct to cut back. If customers don't know, then likelihood is these guys won't either. There are plants which do not tolerate cutting.

A qualified horticulturalist should be available on a regular call-out for as little as € 35.00-€50.00/hr. Hardly a lot for an informed service provider ?

It never surprises me to see what lengths people will go to save money, plenty of times with all the results of false economising and not to mention supporting a black economy.

Hi,
Two years ago we needed to get 3 rooms in our house painted. Normally I'd do it myself but couldn't bear the thought of it after 6 months of renovations. I rang all of the painters & decorators that advertise in my local paper and asked for a quote. Only 2 of the ten or so bothered to turn up to give the quote (after having agreed to do so). One quote was for €2k and the other was for €2300. That was with me supplying the paint. I felt quite weak at the thought of paying this amount, so I didn't. Instead I put an ad myself in the local paper looking for a painter and decorator (the ad cost €7) and lo and behold, I got about six or so calls from eager people wanting to give me a quote and all Eastern European. I got the job done for €700 and I was so impressed I gave an extra €100 'tip'. The job took 3 very long days and I did get a receipt. The job was perfect and I couldn't have asked for nicer people. The moral of this story is: Put your own ad in the local paper looking for somebody to do your specific job and I bet you'll get replies.

Good story...where does that painter you referred to work? Any chance you could PM me his phone number...I need some painting done!

Principles of plumbing are the same. The reason customers are using 'our European brothers and sisters' are because they are prepared to work for less money - they are not exploited.

I also agree with other posters - put your ad up in Polish etc food shops and wait for the phone to ring....

I beg to differ, although I have never worked in Poland, I have worked in many EU countries. Systems are very different, along with regulations, pipe size and local by-laws. plumbing and heating isn't a matter of sticking pipes together, hence the four year apprenticeship.

You would be wrong to assume that safe working practices in one country are the same in another. On this site there are a few posting about bad local installers and plumbers, but as a trouble shooter who works weekly with different installers across the Midlands and Dublin, i find the good ones easily out number the bad ones.

Gebbel, he moved to Dublin from the midlands. I'll look for his number and if I can find it I'll pm you.
